Didn't you say you were unemployed right now? Does that mean you don't know how to hustle?

You should probably stop posting and go shovel someone's sidewalk.

That's what threads like this always turn into. Why? Because some people get upset at those who have a different opinion.

Please apply and see if you get hired with a bachelor's degree and almost through vet school. Maybe then you'll realize what people have been saying in this whole thread.

Now I need to go back and finish the umpteen million pages you guys burned through last night.

One of my classmates works for Panera Bread while she attends vet school, and I have another friend who I go to school with who works at Block Buster part time, while she goes to vet school. They both have four year degrees. So, it's not like it never happens, Vito.
Ah yes - while in vet school. That's the thing. They know they have you for X amount of years. And if you have only one semester or so left, forget about it.

I worked retail while in Grad School, too. When I was unemployed after Grad School I tried to go back to Target - no dice.

KAPital does have a point. My housekeeper is self employed, charges $60 a pop and is so busy that I have to schedule her three weeks in advance. Due to my own trials and tribulations I'm very critical but also empathetic of people who claim to not be able to find a job. I primarily joined the military to pad my resume, not going to lie. I also moved to the opposite side of the country to further my career; it wasn't easy to leave my comfort zone but I did it because I had to. When I see people unemployed who don't seem to have made the same sacrifices I did, I tend to think that they are not trying hard enough to make it. Hate me for it if you want, but it's my life experiences that brought me here. Degrees don't equal skills, I'm sorry. I like to ask unemployed grads what they studied in school, and it's usually something along the lines of art history or Chicano studies. That's great if you want to study that for personal enrichment but to expect to get a viable career out of it is unrealistic in my mind.

Yes but every case is different. I'm 25 and not employed in my optimal career field, but I am employed and could move if I so chose or found better work elsewhere, because I don't have kids/ailing parents/familial responsibilities. Parents don't have that mobility, and people with sick/dying parents don't have that mobility. There are tons of reasons why someone wouldn't be able to move - not just not want to, but are actually unable to move.

In general, and not really directed toward you, PiKA:
I also don't think it's particularly fair to bash people for getting on facebook or what have you. When I was unemployed, I did the bulk of my resume sending in the evenings/late at night. I would spend pleeeeenty of time online doing other things (greekchat, facebook, twitter, whatever) because there's only so much TV you can watch in a day. Also, I think people downplay multitasking. How long does it take to update a facebook status? 5-30 seconds? Does that really take a super huge chunk out of applying time?

And, quite frankly, social networking can also be about job networking. The first thing I told my ex when he got laid off was to start telling EVERYBODY he knew that he was laid off and looking. When jobs DO open up, the people who are working at the company know about them first, are often willing to hand deliver a resume or give their boss a heads up that someone they know, who would be a good fit in their team, is applying. Relatives, former classmates, and friends are invaluable resources in your job hunting. When I hear of someone leaving (and know that they are going to replace that person), I definitely inform people I know who are currently laid off and offer to assist them by mentioning them to the supervisor who will be doing the hiring.

One of our hospitals is closing its inpatient units and I have a friend who is a contingent CTRS there. I know my old supervisor from another hospital in our system is always in need of contingents. My friend mentioned that she put in for a spot at the other hospital and I immediately emailed my old supervisor, gave her my friend's name, told her of the work we had done together at two different hospitals and she immediately responded saying "HR hasn't sent me the info on her yet, but when can she start and how many hours can she work?" I know Linda will hire Denise because she valued ME as an employee and trusts that someone I worked well with and have respect and admiration for professionally will be a good fit for her too. Who you know can be far more important than anything else when job hunting. Facebook and Twitter are ways to stay in touch with those you know, so you are on their radar when they hear of something. It is the BEST way of setting yourself apart from the other 299 people who are applying for the same job.

I never mentioned anything about unemployed people on facebook.

I never said that it was going to be a snap to get hired, especially if you neither know your market nor have a marketing strategy.
This sounds like that idiotic "What Color is your Parachute" book that everyone crams down your throat when you get out of college. It didn't work then, it doesn't work now.

There is a massive brain fart in this thread and the stinch is coming from the people who are still stuck on the basic understandings that the rest of us acknowledged in our opening posts.

Maybe jogging in circles is fun to them.

Do you ever proofread your "arguments" to see if they make sense? LMAO!

Upon further reflection (ie; procrastinating for exam review) I have come to the belief that for Generations X & Y it is the fault of drag queens why we don't understand the concept of how to find employment. RuPaul started it with telling us that we "Better Work" and that's great if we were going to be Super Models of the World. Furthermore this NSFW youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CJbm4N4Hb4 is doing the same thing over 15 years later, not explaining what "work" is for those of us who are not gender illusionist performers or going by the name Miss Thing. I've been working on my runway walk and my sashay and shante, when I should have been getting interview and resume skills.

I'm about to snatch someone's wig off for all this wasted time
