Not everyone is joking. Some people do care and some people are bothered for reasons beyond wanting food on a Sunday. Being closed on Sundays symbolizes something to the company and it symbolizes something to the public.**
My family always had the utmost respect for the companies that were closed on Sundays (these companies were closed on Sundays for decades so people who didn't know would soon learn and get over it). That respect was met with people who had the utmost hatred for the companies that were closed on Sunday.
**It is one thing to be a family company (usually a smaller company) that has to close on certain days for family time/family responsibilities. It is often seen as another thing to be closed on what many consider a day of religious observance. Those who feel some kind of way about that religion, or the beliefs and practices of some of the followers of the religion, will feel some kind of way about the store being closed on that day. Christianity is by no means an oppressed faith-base, being the world's largest religion, but there are elements of intolerance on both sides when people assume things or express hatred as soon as you say "Christian" or "closed on Sundays".
