Why can't young women be successful and do something other than waiting for some dude their dad doesn't like to ask for their hand in marriage? We should be involved in the decision to get married and not wait for some dude and be a "princess" and Taylor Swift should also take a literature class because Shakespeare's play did NOT have a happy ending!
Well, in all fairness, she wrote that song when she was probably 17 or 18 years old. Actually, she's admitted to using We The Kings' song "Check Yes Juliet" as inspiration for it. I also think it's very similar in theme to "She's in Love with the Boy" by Tricia Yearwood. I still love that song.

But in She's in Love with the Boy the mom was supportive of the relationship as the "boy" reminded her of her husband/the father as he was also a hayseed plow boy. There was no mention of an approving mother in Taylor's song, just daddy and a white dress. Often a father will dislike a boy because he is protective of his daughter and a mother will straighten him out; Taylor was pulling a Disney with a single father with a willful daughter who wasn't really willful because she was just waiting for a guy to get on one knee, propose, and to get a white dress.

To be serious though, I am just at the lyrics of so many songs when it comes to grammar and content. I know it makes me an old lady sitting on my porch in my rocking chair with a shot gun, but the horrible music I enjoy, I know is horrible. I mean who takes the Wu-Tang Clan seriously?

Hijack

I actually know somebody who claimed to love the Wu Tang Clan, yet had no idea what CREAM stood for.

Well really if you listen to the lyrics, Taylor's dad DOES approve of her gettin' that white dress, apparently ("And said, marry me Juliet, You'll never have to be alone, I love you and that's all I really know, I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress, It's a love story baby just say yes"). See, it's all better now.

That's pretty bad, but I can honestly see Kanye saying something like that.

But my original point still stands. No one consulted HER, he went and talked to her dad and now he's telling her to buy a white dress. Why is Juliet not included in the decisions of her own life, let alone clothing? I just find it antiquated that in 2009 the idea of women waiting to be asked (after their father's give permission) is supposed to be cheesy feel good music. I can just imagine the response of my step-father if some guy asked for permission to ask for my hand in marriage. It'd be along the lines of "if you think asking me is part of the process, you obviously don't know my daughter well enough to marry her."

Also the amount of women who look good in a white dress is low. I'd never wear a white dress, and if people think I'm the Whore of Babylon for wearing ivory so be it. In many cultures the "purity" of a woman was tied to her head covering, and not the dress color.

Also, the lack of knowledge about Shakespeare kills me. Juliet was forbidden to be with Romeo and was then promised to Count Paris, and then you know, they commit suicide. I can only pray the next pop love song is about Sylvia Plath or Virginia Woolf and how they got together with a handsome poet and lived happily ever after.
