Clearly this must be true, considering she won this award, has won many others, is nominated for even more, and sold out most of her tour dates within 5 minutes. It is not a waste of money because he is talented. Taylor, until yesterday and Kanye, was not very relevant. Most people did not know who she was. Many people in this thread and elsewhere have said "I didnt know she sang that song." So in the scheme of relevance in music she was basically irrelevant. As compared to Kanye she's (or was) a nobody.

She's not completely irrelevant. Anyone who listens to their local top 40 station will hear both of their music within the hour. And there were lots of people who didnt know who Kanye was before that whole "George Bush doesnt care about black people" bit.

Fans of her music and career know who Taylor Swift is. Ditto for Kanye. whether the audiences overlap, probably not much.

This, coming from someone who also didnt know she sang the song she won the award for. I didnt know half the songs Lady Gaga was responsible for - does that make her irrelevant, though she's had a couple of this past year's hits?

Almost every artist at the start of their career is irrelevant. The point here is that on the scale of relevant to pop music to irrelevant Taylor falls on the irrelevant side. If she quit music on Aug. 15th, 2009 there wouldn't be very much talk about it (there would be some, but not much) whereas if Kanye West quit music there would be a whole lot of talk. My saying she is irrelevant is not to take a dig at her. Im not saying she has no importance at all I am saying that in the scheme of pop music and pop culture she is not particularly special or important. She wouldn't have gone down in MTV history for her win. Beyonce, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Madonna, U2, Michael Jackson are all major acts and extremely relevant to pop culture and will be talked about for years to come. Taylor Swift (if she doesnt do anything else) will be mentioned because Kanye spazzed during her speech.

To say that someone is irrelevant is to say that they are of no importance at all. Well, actually it's to say that she has nothing to do with the matter at hand. The matter, being the VMAs, I'm assuming. Or famous. Either way, she has one or she is. Therefore, she is relevant.

Anyone who listens to any country music station or Top 40 station knows who Taylor Swift is, just like they know who Kanye is. Top 40 stations have been playing her songs for about two years now. And in case you didn't know, VMAs are voted on by the viewers...so obviously plenty of people know who Taylor Swift is!
