Because it is possible to respect her memory and the sanctity of your state's election laws at the same time.
And like I said earlier:
Again, it doesn't matter and I don't really care because HI isn't going to swing anyways, but what's the point in having election laws if you can ignore them at will? Following election laws tends to be something Democrats get real excited about (and it's a good thing to care about), but you can't selectively enforce them just because it's a sob story.

"Kevin Cronin, chief election officer for the state of Hawaii says:
Ms. Dunham’s absentee mail ballot was received and reviewed under the Hawaii standards for processing absentee mail ballots… She was alive at that time. Her ballot will be opened tomorrow, and it will be counted in the same way that all absentee voters would be treated under our law."
Your comment was incredibly bitchy.
And I'm incredibly late.

I'm with you on this.
If the law were different, it wouldn't bother me. If the election official had simply declined comment, I wouldn't have given it any more thought. But I wouldn't expect that you could come out and say in this case we're going to violate the laws of Hawaii, and then expect to retain the public trust, especially if any elections ever have unexpected outcomes. The official is undermining his or her own system.

Seriously - I always talk about what a big impact my grandmother (my mother's mother) had in my life, and she didn't even raise me. Hopefully Obama has gotten, or will get, a few moments of solitude when he can take a deep breath and properly mourn.

It's got to really suck being away from his sister right now.
I've been thinking about my grandmother a lot these past few weeks. She has voted Republican as long as I can remember (military town), and I know she walked to the VFW early this morning to cast her ballot. She's 85--so cute! I should call her today after work.

Not too good. It apparently got dirty when I was having to wade through all your bullshit.
The only point I'm trying to make is that HI law says her vote doesn't count and it seems to be foolish that their elections chief got on TV and said it does. Nothing beyond that, no political point, no insult to anyone (other than that elections official). Not entirely sure why you're so upset by that.

That has to be one of the harshest, and frankly trashiest, things I have read.

This just in-This is just about an exclusive for GC!!!
A few PM's between myself and another GC'er resulted in this being posted on Slate.com just a few minutes ago:
Obama's Grandmother's Vote Barely Made the Cut
Posted Tuesday, November 04, 2008 4:05 PM | By Chris Wilson
Although Barack Obama’s maternal grandmother passed away late Sunday night, Hawaii’s chief elections officer says the absentee ballot she cast on October 27 will still count in today’s election. At the risk of being callous to this sad story, the subject of whether Madelyn Dunham’s vote should count is open to interpretation.

Very good article that had a reasonable explanation. Makes sense to me now and I don't have a problem with it anymore as long as, like that lawyer said in the article, that's always their standard. Thanks!!

Nittanyalum, you called it. It comes down to "sufficient proof."
It makes good sense to use the uniform standard they describe, but it might have been better had that been covered in the original comment from the election official.

I don't believe how this thread took a turn for the worse. Sometimes I just wonder about my fellow GC'ers.

The initial shift seemed kind of harsh, but it really does seem like a legitimate and interesting issue in terms of when votes count.
And, it's not like any of us, as far as I know, actually know her or Obama.
Yeah, it'd be nicer to discuss this only with tact and grace, but it's not like we crashed the funeral.
