Ksuviolet, knight_shadow and epchick definitely gave me some nostalgia as I went to HS from 98-02. Let me add a few, which may or may not be NY-specific:
-wearing loud-print pajama pants as regular pants (kind of like how people wear scrubs?) Old Navy was THE spot for these. I had some red ones with white and blue stars. Bonus points if worn with uptowns/air force ones, k-swiss, or saucony.
-chinese chopsticks (for the hair)
-plastic jewels for the face (in particular the middle of the forehead or corners of the eyes)
-winter coats like shearlings, bubble jackets (bear, north face) and the swishy ones too (north face makes them too but ones by columbia were a close second)
-air force ones in assorted colors (white on white are the official spring/summer sneaker-thats how you know it was on-stores didn't really sell white uptowns in the winter). Black on black were for the winter, but sometimes unnacceptable as they resembeled orthepedic shoes.
-coach belts with the coach tag (in assorted colors to match... Everything) colorful belts in general were the poo, you could buy them for 2 dollars on any street corner.
-the "reverse" denim look (the color of if you wore your jeans inside out). The black version of these were the win. Regular black jeans were no longer acceptable after this.
-black suede timbs
-flat twists were somewhat popular. My mother hated doing them cause she said "everyone wore them, do something different" (she was a hairdresser). Microbraids were in too.
-bandana/triangle tops
-headbands with bandana fabric attached (someone tell me they know what I'm talkin about)
-denim skorts. Need I say more?
-ankle-length skirts with splits on both sides
-i think k_s mentioned the matchy-matchy style: I was all over this. Old Navy actually had some street cred and made this easy-they always had cool socks to match shirts. I remember this pink striped long sleeved shirt that had matching socks. The trick was finding a way to make sure the socks were noticed.
-racing-car-style jackets (with huge obnoxious logos and brands like Tide, Frosted Flakes, etc on them). There were also these shitty leather jackets that had "extasy" written on them. Hated them.
-jansports with all those little zipper pull strings (the more you had, the cooler you were. You were not to buy them, you had to jack them from someone else's jansport. I always got got. I think the trick was to burn the edges with a lighter so unknotting them were harder. Actually, this was more a junior high thing, but I remember it in HS too)
-victoria secret's pear glace was one of THE scents to wear. It was the love spell of yesteryear-everyone wore it and you knew the smell instantly. Others included Cool Water, Perry Ellis 360, CK1, I wanna say Burberry, tommy girl. And remember Calgon body spray? Our locker room always smelled like this!
-ankle socks with the colored cotton ball on the back (though it was just as ok to not have the cotton ball)
-acrylic tips in french manicure style, but in the color of whatever your outfit was. White one day, lavender the next. It was always on.
I could go on and on. Damn those were good times.
