biggest fashion trends from HS
I was talking about this at work this week, and it made me curious.
What were the big trends from your HS years? Mine (circa 1998-2002): *Those "power bead" bracelets. *2 piece prom/homecoming dresses (bonus points if yours was fuschia). *Glitter (mostly freshman year, body glitter was a must for formals) *Those Steve Madden slides, the black ones with the chunky botttoms. *Cutting the tops off of your jeans (a la Mariah Carey in the "Heartbreaker" video). *Those backless tops that were held on by like one string in the back (someone HAS to know what I'm talking about). *Belly button piercings. I seriously am in awe of the fact that people are STILL getting them because these were huge in HS. |
Things I remember from 1998 - 2002:
- Cutting the bottoms of jeans to make straight-legs into boot-cut - JNCOs (in like 9th grade) - Eyebrow rings (EVERYONE had them when I was in school) - Old Nokias with removable faceplates to match an outfit - Timbs, ugly ass Lugz, and Saucony's to match your outfits - Colored contacts to match outfits (red lenses to match red clothes, etc) There was a lot of matching going on in my day :p I'm sure there's some more bad fashion, but I've purged it from my memory. |
*The tube top was a big deal back then too for some reason (if you could get out of the house with one on without the parents losing it). You were ultra cool if your tube top was sparkly.
*One-shoulder tops. Like a tank top with one shoulder. *Shrugs. You know, those sleeve things that went over tank tops. *Twin set cardigans, black plants, and chunky heeled shoes. You were being "classy" when you wore those 3 things. |
1993-1997 = Watch Clueless. Add country. Shake and stir.
baby doll dresses with knee highs or thigh highs brown Bass shoes Duck Head ANYTHING Tommy Hilfiger ANYTHING umbro shorts vests, crocheted was best |

1989-1993
Oversized shirts Overalls with one strap hanging down Leotard shirts (they were skin tight and snapped at the crotch and were usually worn with jeans) Color-fade clothing Units (anyone remember this crap? Their belt/tube top was a staple of my freshman year wardrobe!) Anything in Hunter Green, Navy and Maroon...even better if all three colors were in one item Big Bows to go with our Mall bangs Hoop earrings Floral patterned shirts Z Cavarrichi, Girbaud, Guess jeans Boat shoes Duck shoes with plaid uppers Plaid shirts Basically, if it was ugly, we wore it! |

My sisters wore those in college, but I was never into silver then. |

Chunky boots. Doc Martins if you could swing them, otherwise "hikers" from AE. Flannel/plaid. Sheer peasant tops (though I could never pull them off). Rugby shirts. Bell bottoms had been in for a bit. Tapered jeans were finally out, thank goodness. Thrift store/consignment clothes were just becoming cool (or maybe it was just my group of friends). |

1980-83
Jordache, Calvin Klein and Gloria Vanderbilt jeans, TIGHT.. so tight that you had to lay on the bed to get them zipped and some girls broke ribs from them (or so the rumors said!) clogs ruffles-ruffly shirts/peasant shirts preppy anything: polos, turtle necks, sweaters worn over the shoulder with the sleeves tied in a knot in front penny loafers Nikes were just getting popular mood rings (that may have been junior high, but I have one of the originals!) everything was matchy-matchy so you wore the same colored socks as your shirt with matching earrings and beads. OR, gold, gold, gold.. herringbone, preferably, even though it kinked up after a couple wearings and was useless! |
I had most of the things from the nineties, like a spoiled little brat.
The prom dress I mentioned in the other thread? The top was sparkly and had a cut out back with one string coming across it. Match that with stick on jewels as a tramp stamp, plus my belly button ring (believe me I took it out IMMEDIATELY when I moved in at college). Ball gown skirt. Make it Banana Yellow. I didn't tackle the fuchsia dress until senior year (2002). Although that fuchsia dress was kick ass and if my boobs weren't too big and I had the occasion I'd wear it again today. |

Also big were: Cross Colours/Karl Kani, or anything with bright colors Nikes--the Deon Sanders shoes and the sandles (with socks!) big shirts and tights shirts/outfits with Disney/Looney Tunes characters shirts with the ruffles chokers Starter gear And my senior year, my school decided to go to uniforms. NOT COOL. Quote:
