This just upsets me. Very sad, but as DS said, not surprising.

LOL.

Nothing surprises me at all with kids anymore.

I went into my GYN's office for an appt and sat next to a pregnant 13 year old.

It was so ridiculous because here she is like 8 months pregnant and she really is JUST a kid. I mean, she called her mom "Mommy" still.

I remember her trying to fill out the paperwork and such and having her mom fill it out because she "didn't know how." She had to ask, "Mommy, am I allergic to anything??"

I kept thinking, wow, she has no clue what she's gotten herself into.

This may be what's different about teen motherhood these days. I think it's always been around, but that in the past there was as assumption that if a person was pregnant that she needed to mature fast enough to take on a maternal role OR plan on giving the baby up to be raised by someone else.

And now, in a lot of the families where a teenage girl gets pregnant, the teenagers stays in her child role but the family also keeps the kid around.

The only reason why I'd judge it as being worse is that it seems often to completely cut fathers out of the loop. In this case in Britain it makes sense if the dad is this young, but not in cases when the parents are a little older.

My mom told me once that if a girl in her HS got pregnant, she "magically disappeared" for 9 months and came back baby-free. This usually meant that she'd had the baby and given it up for adoption.

In some communities, we're seeing that when a girl gets pregant, her parents seem to take on the parental role with the baby, allowing her to continue "living her life" so to speak. Thus sticking the parents with another kid in addition to the ones they already have.

What did they call it on "Desperate Housewives" when Danielle van de Kamp was pregnant? I think they sent her to a convent for unwed mothers, but said that she was at "Boarding School in Switzerland".

In any case, this story in England sounds very, very sad. These kids and the baby have really no opportunities to reach their full potential.
