This isn't a recent story, by any means, but ESPN has just done a piece on Lyman Bostock and his murder. I'm a bit of a nerd about baseball history, so I'd heard of Bostock, but many fans haven't. He seemed to be on his way to a great career before he was gunned down at the age of 28.

If you have any interest in baseball or the history of the sport, it's definitely a good read.

Powerful story, I hadn't heard of Bostock so I'm glad I read this; I'll send the link to my Dad, he falls in the "baseball nerd" category as well. Unbelievable that Smith essentially walked!!!!

It's kind of interesting that the story has been all but forgotten about, with very few recent accounts written about Bostock or his death.

From a purely baseball perspective, he was an outstanding hitter; if you look at his stats (http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/bostoly01.shtml), both his basic (batting average, OBP) and advanced (OPS+) were pretty solid.
