Teen held captive more than 3 years
Teen escapes after being held captive in Illinois for more than 3 years
A 25 year old man and his mother held her captive. She was raped repeatedly and has a 2 year old child by her captor. Thank God she was rescued sooner rather than later. This is reminiscent of Jaycee Lee Duggard.**
**I admit that when I first saw this on the news last night, I thought this was people trying to fake it and gain notoriety like Duggard. Assuming everything in this story is accurate and this incident occurred as it has been reported, I hope that jackass and his jackass mother are held to the fullest extent of the law.

Don't forget Elisabeth Frizl in Austria that was held captive in the basement for 24 years and had a bunch of kids with her father.
There are some sick people in this world.

Oh yeah, Elisabeth Fritzl. And by her own family.

Good question.
Many people who are held captive give birth in the house. I guess giving birth in a hospital is no more a sign of escape than any other time some of these people are out of the house. The idea of being mentally, emotionally, and physically captive is that the person tries to escape a few times and, if ever semi-successful, the person is brought back by force. Then when the person is away from the house, including in a hospital, the person is so mentally captive that the person fears another attempt.

Who knows what he said to her. He very well could have told her he would kill anyone she spoke to.

I imagine it was an especially vulnerable time for her and she didn't want to risk injury, not to mention the fact that had to have been scared.

I'm sure you don't mean it...but you sound like you're blaming the victim here and that angers and saddens me.

I see what you mean but I think AlphaFrog is really just trying to understand the psychology and details behind it all.
This was also discussed on the 20/20 Jaycee Lee Duggard show last night. It discussed how she was sometimes in public and did not flee. It also discussed how they were once or twice in the house when patrol officers did their visits and Jaycee talked to patrol officers. Throughout the whole ordeal Jaycee and her daughters were 30 feet from where the patrol officers checked monthly and the patrol officers never checked in the backyard.

Right. There are several instances throughout history of kidnappings and how the victim was this><close to someone of authority and didn't act...of course out of fear, I presume. I know AlphaFrog probably didn't meant it, but I wanted to make it very clear that even if she were sitting in a room full of police officers and did nothing...this WAS NOT HER FAULT.

Of course getting kidnapped and raped is not the victim's fault.
I'm just really wondering what happened that she could go to a hospital and deliver a baby and not find some moment to give someone an inkling she needed help. Maybe there truly wasn't an opportunity.

Read my next post...fear of retaliation! Maybe there wasn't an opportunity or maybe she sat in a room full of police officers without her kidnapper and was fearful for her, her child's, or her family's life. It doesn't matter...just because opportunity may or may not have been there, it doesn't mean she would have taken it. And if she didn't take it, IT IS NOT HER FAULT. That's all I'm getting at...

Also there is Stockholm Syndrome. The kidnapping victim's brain makes them some to identify with their kidnappers as a survival instinct. Happens to civilians who are captured and made war brides, etc.

AF already confirmed that is not what she was saying so I'm not sure why you're continuing to "get at" that point. All of us agree, it's not her fault. You don't need to keep driving it in when she's stated that she absolutely did not mean it the way it was perceived.
I miss DrPhil. Power trips are for the birds.
