Hey!
Hi, my name's Kahla. I'm 19 and I'm a junior (credit-wise) at the University of Florida . I'm planning on rushing for a sorority this fall! I'm really anxious and really excited all at the same time, I'm just hoping that being a junior won't hurt my chances too badly.

Thank you so much for the information! I will definitely be keeping an open mind during the rushing process, I really don't have one that I just absolutely have to be in. I was told that even though I was a junior that I still should mention the fact that I was the age of freshman/soph.. but I'm not sure if that will even help me out or not? I was a transfer there for the spring '10 semester, and I was not involved with any groups on campus, but I was recognized in the campus paper for leading UF in a college competition. I realize my chances are slim, but I know that I will regret it if I don't at least try. I guess we'll see what happens.

At least you have something to talk about. Make sure you get recs and if you're taking summer classes, make sure you get good grades!

True, I hope it makes for good conversation haha. As far as letters of recommendations go, I was told by a current sorority girl at UF that that was only important if I was 100% sure of what house I wanted to be in. Another sorority girl that I had talked to told me she had gone in with no letters of rec because she had no idea on what sorority she wanted. Was I given correct information or no? Both of these girls did rush as freshmen so our situations are a little different and they are both aware that I'm rushing as a junior.

If both of them rushed as freshmen then their circumstances were different. You are a Junior and UF formal recruitment is competitive. I highly recommend you get recs. It's always better to be safe than sorry, so put in the extra effort on getting them (for every sorority). Even though one active member of a sorority told you that it's only important if you were 100% sure of the house you wanted to be in. Honestly, I find what she said as a little odd. When you go through formal recruitment, you have to be open minded and not listen to the tent talk. Form your own opinions and follow your heart.
This is just what I suggest to you, you can take it with a grain of salt if you like, but I believe if you go in without recs then expect heavy cuts.
I went through rush as a Junior without recs at USF, but USF is not competitive at all. Also, I did not receive invites on the 2nd & 3rd day from the sororities I liked a lot during FR. Maybe that would of been different if I had recs? Maybe it was because of something else, like my GPA not being too high, not enough involvement, maybe I didn't click with the members and I thought I did? But in the end, I am happy with my decision

Thank you so much for the advice, I'm going to probably pull for those letters of rec only because I want my chances to be good (well as good as they can be!). I'm curious though, and I really hope this isn't a stupid question because I'm still so new to this rushing/sorority thing, but are letters of rec only allowed to come from past sorority members or can they come from people that I've worked for/volunteered for/etc.? From what I have read previously it seemed like they were only allowed to come from past sorority members, but I want to make sure I have the information correct.

Just thought I would share with you a great recruitment story. I'm not sure if she was a freshmen or not, but she rushed at UF.

Here is some general info about recs:

And here is a link on sororities allowing collegians to write recs for you, but they must be attending a different university. There is a list of sororities that allow it, some sororities (not listed) only allow alums.
