wow @ above transgender link.
it is hard to be open-armed and welcoming, and exclusive at the same time. someone, somewhere gets their feelings hurt. the thing most people dont realize is transgendered people are often not gay. their bodies develop as the opposite sex as their hormones tell them they are. they truly dont feel like "themselves" until their operations are complete.
i would hope that, one day, a D9 org or any other GLO for that matter could welcome people in that situation. there is no telling how much good they could do our communities and orgs.

i don't like the idea of men who had sex change operations because they are "women at heart" (read: gay) joining my org, but i don't personally have a problem with true transgender women who were just "born with something extra" joining at all. although we've never had such a women seek membership...

HUH!
Coming from a IFC perspective this is insane! I couldn't imagine a bunch of girls knowing our ritual and calling themselves TAUS! I think the world has forgotten what a fraternitiy and sorority are! Being Greek used to be an honor back in my parents days, only the best and the brightest. It used to be a great American tradition and now it has been abominated into something sick and gross. Now I want to point out not because these guys are homosexual, are organization promotes that we "know no north, no south, no east, no west, but to know man as man." As long as men period love my organization and keep the ritual alive by becoming living examples i don't care who they LOVE! But i have a huge problem with the ritual of AKA being trampled like that. Regardless if we don't like every person in every organization we are to respect and honor everyone elses ritual by keeping our noses out of it. Ritual is personal and sacred. My big bro always has a comment about how our ritual is his CHURCH! He always says don't mess with my church and that should go with everyone. Good luck to all you AKA's who are trying to live up to your values and ritual. I don't know much about ur history, but I know you weren't built on hate, and id hate to see such a prominent organization lose there focus because of a bunch of impostors. But either way good luck ladies, and i believe you have the entire support from the REAL greek community.

i totally agree. i think i was at one point naive and thought that crossdressers/transgendered people were all gay. it wasnt until i saw a study on the human brain that showed the surprising similarities that females and transgendered males have in common. it was almost like taking a womans brain and putting it into a male. i still can consider you a female/soror/sister, after your brain matches your body.

Transgender and transsexual aren't the same thing as being homosexual.
It's the distinction between sex, gender, and sexual orientation.

Sororities need to specify that your birth sex has to be female. This will prevent men whose GENDER (which is social versus "sex" which is biological) is female from attempting to join. It may also prevent hermaphrodites if the sex is ambiguous.

I watched a show on transsexual and transgenderism last night.
Very interesting and it fits into what the gender and sexuality literature discuss.
I was reminded of the two transgender "women" I met a few months ago. They were obviously born men and had just begun female hormones. I was waiting for one of them to say that "she" wanted to be a Delta.

yes, if that is the way it is going to be, it needs to be specified. once you get your surgeries, DMV will let you change your gender on your license. specifying birth gender will solve that...but it also brings to light the fact that there are women who are born women, but their sex is male!

You mean men who were born female? True so the specification would be "sex: female and gender: woman."
Then we'd have to worry about whether people are disclosing their full medical history. We don't require medical histories for applicants so we would have to trust that people are honest.

Would we then expell those who may already be members?

i was thinking the same thing...i can't believe there isnt a single transgendered person in any of the GLO's. there may not be many, but there have got to be some out of the millions of greeks!

I went on a date with this Sigma who claims his line brother became a woman.
And no, I didn't ask him if his LB then automatically became a Zeta, but you know I was thinking it real hard.

yes, i know. i guess i wasn't clear what i meant: my problem lies with men who have had sex change operations because they want to be women. i would not consider them to be eligible for sisterhood. however, i don't personally make those descisions for my entire sorority, so who knows what will happen in the next 10, 15 years!
