We talked about that in law school, pretty ridiculous. Kind of like the title of this thread.

Why was it ridiculous? Because I object to people spelling America with KKK? How absurd of me.

Where is there a reason to the title of this thread? There is absolutely nothing racial about this case.

Statutory rape is stupid in some cases. Ask my (white) high school classmate who did time because of it.

They were the idiots who videotaped it.

Yep.

A race element isn't "required" for these statutory rape cases to receive the sentencing and outcome they receive. However, the race element does feed off of public perception and stereotypes to add fuel to the fire.

Yeah, i remember a kid from my town that went to prison his senior year of HS for sleeping with a freshmen girl. He was white and came from a wealthy family/ arrested by white cops and tried and convicted by white lawyers and judges...is that amerikkkan?? Seriously though, I feel really bad for you. I've never had misjudgement or inequality placed against my sparkely white skin.

I just noticed that as well.

I'm surprised that the Edit message on the bottom of the post didn't show up.

It had to have been one of the mods.

A mod had also deleted my previous post pointing out the thread title change.

It's the sentencing differential that's the real point people around the country are making, not whether or not both whites and blacks are arrested and sentenced for statutory rape. Of course, many of us know firsthand that race can also factor into whether or not someone is accused and reported for forcible rape and statutory rape--but that's not the topic.

The issue with Wilson (what starang21 posted) may just be GA's archaic statutory rape law--which was later altered to not include oral sex but that doesn't help Wilson because it isn't retroactive. Are they telling us there was no other alternative than to declare him a child molestor?

If he pled to or was convicted of any charge that put him on the sex offender registry, he couldn't live at home with his younger sister. He wouldn't accept that, so he waited for his trial...Two charges already had been dropped, and it was clear from the first witness that the rape charge wouldn't stick either. The aggravated child molestation, though, was on tape....He looked at the forewoman. She was crying, seeming to understand they'd just undone a promising future. Indeed, when the jurors found out there was a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence, several were incensed. The prosecution told them to write a letter, then moved on to the next case.
