We talked about that in law school, pretty ridiculous. Kind of like the title of this thread.

kinda like your comment...

Why was it ridiculous? Because I object to people spelling America with KKK? How absurd of me.

amycat412 01-30-2007 08:42 PM

that is an appalling story. WOW. Unbelievable.

PM_Mama00 01-30-2007 08:43 PM

Where is there a reason to the title of this thread? There is absolutely nothing racial about this case.

Statutory rape is stupid in some cases. Ask my (white) high school classmate who did time because of it.

They were the idiots who videotaped it.

you're joking, right?

shinerbock 01-30-2007 08:53 PM

I think there probably is some element of race here. However, to be fair there are a lot of non-minority kids with similar stories. This is a story because of the bright future he had. There is another case about a kid getting 10 years in FL for stealing a 6 pack of beer. I dunno what race he is, though.

laylo 01-30-2007 09:28 PM

Similar to the Marcus Dixon case, also in Georgia. His conviction was reversed in 2004, maybe there's hope for this kid too.

I didn't know someone could go on trial for statutory rape without the "victim" pressing charges.

shinerbock 01-30-2007 09:50 PM

Oh, I didn't notice this was different from the Dixon case. I'll have to go back and read the article.

This is all sorts of messed up. Another reason I don't necessarily agree with mandatory minimums.

And OMG what is up with these girls?

DSTCHAOS 01-30-2007 10:13 PM

Good job with the title of the thread.

Yep.

A race element isn't "required" for these statutory rape cases to receive the sentencing and outcome they receive. However, the race element does feed off of public perception and stereotypes to add fuel to the fire.

I watched a Lifetime about women doing mandatory minimums for drug conspiracies. There are some women who are doing life just because of taking a message or driving their boyfriend somewhere. It was really scary.

I just see it as the girl was a slut. She got passed around like nothing while on video tape. She's a smart one too.
