When I was in 5th grade, I was the Pink Power Ranger. Ahhh, I loved that costume.

I got together with a group of friends and we went as different incarnation of Madonna. I rocked the "Like a Virgin" look with the lace gloves and crucifix.
Another good one was GOLDEN GIRLS, I was Rose.

When I was little, I went as Raggedy Ann for a couple of years. I wore a blue floral-print dress and red-and-white striped knee-highs. My mom made me a wig using a mop head, which she dyed red to look like Raggedy Ann's red yarn hair. She got me some black eyeliner so that I could draw her eyelashes and smile onto my face, and she got me some red lipstick so that I could have her red nose and lips. The costume was a big hit.

When I was a freshman in college, it was tradition for us to trick-or-treat at the President's house and faculty condos on campus. My dorm suite decided to go as nuns, and when the faculty opened their doors, we sang "Trick or Treeeeeat."
Since my birthday is near Halloween, and therefore sometimes on the day of many Halloween parties, I've gone as a birthday present a couple of times...which basically consists of wrapping myself up in a bow.

When I was in college, a Thermometer.

As a child, I remember all the fun things that Mama helped us 'be'. We'd rummage through the closets at home and come up with something humorous yet very effective.
College: went to Halloween social as a Playboy Bunny. CUTE pic with a guy I'm still friends with (he's married to a pledge sister...) Did I REALLY have the guts to wear that?
Adult: we had just started dating & I made George & Jane Jetson costumes for an Alpha Gam alum Halloween party! Oh, how fun!
My children: husband is an SAE, so I made the Anne Geddes-knockoff lion costume for #1 son's first Halloween and passed it around the SAE alum crew. Each year is an adventure--especially when I made a wizard's robe, puss-n-boots (think Shrek), Dopey and goodness-knows-how-many princess items!

My mom always sewed all of my costumes as a kid. I remember being a pumpkin, a skeleton and a witch. The best one was in 1976, when everybody was making a big deal out of the bicentennial, my mom made me a beautiful colonial girl dress and hat. I loved that one.
As an adult, my best one was a tin man costume. I was working in a child psych hospital so all the staff dressed up (and we made costumes for all 60 kids too!). The Occupational Therapy and Recreational Therapy staff (there were 7 of us) were all characters from the Wizard of Oz. My tin man was home made from cardboard. I couldn't sit while wearing it, but it looked really good.
Now I just have a Renaissance costume that I wear whenever I need a costume. Although, one year, for the Cub Scout pack meeting/Halloween party, I was having a bad week and didn't feel like putting on that dress so I dressed all in black, put dark circles under my eyes and this crazy black hair wig that was all ratty and messed up. When grownups asked me what I was, I said I was a Menopausal Mom....lol.

The most memorable (and not for a good reason) was the one my aunt forced on my in elementary school. I was staying with her at the time and she refused to let me wear the cat costume my mom had painstakingly made for me. Instead, she made me a costume she approved of and I had to go to school dressed as the Virgin Mary.
As if things couldn't get worse, I was in public school at the time and some parents & teachers found my costume offensive so I had to sit in the office crying my heart out while all the other kids joined in the parade.
I was too young to understand the ramnifications of wearing a religious costume at a public school.

Most memorable: Being a ballerina in my senior year of high school with an actual tutu.
Imagine trying to sit in a desk! The teachers allowed me to sit on the floor eventually.

My mom's not creative so most of our costumes were store-bought. In kindergarten, I was Bridal Barbie. It came with one of those plastic masks and it was really cold that night, so I was shivering while my face was all sweaty in the mask. In first grade, I was a witch. In third grade, my aunt sewed me a purple princess dress and my crown was a white lace-and-pearl wedding crown. In fifth grade, I was an angel. In seventh grade, I went as a monster. I had one of those latex masks and wore all black. In eighth grade, I wore a faceless mask (black hood with black mesh over the face) and black clothes and carried a butcher knife.
In college, I was a Playboy bunny, a flasher (wore flashing Halloween safety lights under my jacket), and Barbie's slutty friend (my roommate and I were supposed to go as Barbies...she went all out as Princess Barbie and I procrastinated so I had to just throw something together at the last minute).
After college, I've been an 80's girl and a devil. This year, I'm thinking of going as a cowgirl, saloon girl, or Little Bo Peep/Mary Had A Little Lamb.

I've gone as a shooting star (complete with watergun), and last year I was Amy Winehouse. That costume was a smashing success. I hope this year to be Slash from GNR, but I'm not sure I can afford to buy a wig and tophat.
The best costumes are the cheap ones where you're the only one wearing it! I hate the variations on slutty girl- slutty policewoman, slutty french maid, slutty cat, slutty devil, slutty angel. Enough!

How did that one work?
My most creative costume was last year's. I was a devil with a blue dress on - complete with blue wig ([horns] and shades to match). I made my then-boyfriend be Johnny B. Goode. We were cute!
This year, I am going as Sailor Moon!
