Yeah, I read about the rude comment about Mallory Hagan's weight on yahoo. I thought her comment at the beginning of the pageant about sitting backstage with coffee and donuts was a shot back at Miss New York for what she said.

Sigh...the bigots are on twitter right now saying Miss America is not "American." It's sickening! People don't know the definition of "Nationality."

And I read about her talking about Mallory Hagen's weight...she's a curvy gal and she should be proud! I'm not into the "Mean Girls" crap...

Why? Is it because she had ink? I liked that about her.....plus she's a servicemember. Kudos to her.

Carly Mathis is Miss Georgia. The song was meaningful to her because as a young teen she was quite overweight. At school she was teased and did not resemble the woman you see now. With doctor's help and change to a healthy lifestyle she overcame her weight and self esteem problems.

In interviews she has discussed her past health difficulties.

The tattoo on Kansas' side was the serenity prayer. She was in seriously great shape, Army kind of does that to you. I would have been proud had she been Miss America. She is willing to serve our country, I am glad she made it as far as she did.

I don't particularly like her ink, but I thought her hair looked dead, overly bleached and processed.

They probably didn't want to claim her because of her unsportsmanlike conduct, but then she won. That's my guess.

This buzzfeed article has a good look at the hate Miss New York has gotten. It's disguting that just because of her skin shade every assumes she must be middle eastern.

Mild correction for you.

What if she were of Middle Eastern origin, or Muslim, or born in a different country than the one she's in now, or anything else that makes her slightly different from Betty Sue Smith from Heartland, USA?

Absolutely nothing.

The problem isn't that these ignorant bigots think she might be any of the things listed above (full stop), but that any of those things mean she's a terrorist.

As an Indian-American, I'm very, very disappointed in her unkind comment about her predecessor, but was so very glad to see so much ethnic diversity in last night's competition. The (semi?) finalists included women from Indian (NY), Chinese (CA), likely half-Chinese (MN), and black (TX) backgrounds. I think I also noticed many other examples of ethnic diversity among all of the 53 contestants (as evidenced by names and appearances).

What accomplished young women we have representing our states and territories! A solider, many future doctors and lawyers, scholars (Miss Washington, D.C. is an Indian-American and a Phi Beta Kappa from UNC.), opera singers, and the list goes on and on! Amazing!

I think you give racist people too much credit.

When Vanessa Williams was crowned there were similar reactions to her win.

“The situation was investigated fully back in July and there is no validity to the story whatsoever. Miss New York spoke to Mallory Hagan to let her know there was no validity and to apologize if she was offended in any way.”

This is the statement that the Miss America officials made prior to the competition. Apparently, someone else in the group (not Miss NY) made the comment that was then attributed to the contestant.
