If OP is in Northern California, might look into Santa Clara Valley. Last I knew they were active. It's as close as the South Bay, almost.

IMPRESSED! My mother was born in the City and she regarded with disdain anyone who said "Frisco" or wore shorts in the City in the summer.
As for contacting individual Alumnae Chapters in Reno, I am with Old_Row on this one. You run the risk of stubbing your own toe, big time, if you approach individual sorority alumnae chapters with "hello, I need a rec". That's why you go through the "mother group" which is the Alumnae Panhellenic.
Not to mention that geographically, Reno can be a far piece from an hour from Tahoe on the California side. The Donner Party kind of learned that geography lesson the hard way.
Would go for Sacramento area.
