How did Cats manage to become one of the longest-running shows ever on Broadway? What is the appeal?

If I won the lottery, one of my first acts would be to rent an apartment in NYC near Broadway, and fly up there and stay for weeks at a time just to go to shows. First on the list? Book of Mormon.

Ditto. Although I would just buy an apartment and live in NYC forever. Which is the ultimate goal anyways.
But on the other part of that paragraph.........why is everyone obsessed with Book of Mormon? It was good, it was funny, but it wasn't the end-all of hilarious Broadway musicals.

I'm sure it's not the end-all, but I've been wearing out the soundtrack recently (frequent 4 hour roadtrips with spotty radio to go check on an aging/ailing parent), and I just want to see it.
I loved Avenue Q - and I think this has similar appeal.
