While I can't answer some of your questions in an Iowa-specific manner, I can say that most of your questions (i.e. what topics are "safe", etc) have been asked before and you can find plenty of threads by using the search feature at the top of the page.
Also, please keep in mind that recruitment is a two-way street and is a mutually-selective process. While you may think that you're out there looking for the house that is right for you, they are looking for girls that are right for them.
