I knew a Gene/Jean couple for many years. I'm sure it caused them a ton of problems and it wasn't easy for their friends and co-teachers either. "Call back Gene C_." "Boy Gene or girl Jean?"
It was bad enough at my house when I was growing up: my father and one brother shared the same first name and my mother and other brother did but at least my brothers grew up and moved out! With a married couple, the confusion would go on for lots longer!
