Would you date someone with the same first name as yours?
With some of the gender neutral names out there, it is not impossible to find someone of the opposite sex with the same name. Obviously, this can happen in same sex couples too. I knew a few.
Would this be a turn-off? A turn-on? Have you done it before? |
my name is definitely female, i dont think there's a male equivalent (you know like Michael/Michelle).
but in HS i went to school with a Pirouette (who went by Perry) and dated a guy who went by Perry (i forget what his real name was). i dont think it caused problems. now what about same last names or names of ex's? |
My name is very female, so this isn't an issue.
As far as names of ex bf's- I don't care. It's not like they'll behave the same because they have the same name. |
My name is also very feminine... no chance of meeting a guy with that name or even anything similar.
Along the same line of questioning... how about seriously dating someone whose name rhymes with yours (think "Julia Goulia" in The Wedding Singer)? This happened to a friend of mine... and she wound up marrying the guy. She has a totally cheeseball name, but has a fantastic husband, so I guess it all worked out okay. |
It would never happen. I have a hard enough time finding other women with my name, let alone a man.
Although I do know a Kelly (Male) and Kelly (Female) that were engaged. There are "partners" across the street from me that have the same name, but they are of the same sex (Sue and Susan). |
Seeing as a male with my first name would be a nancy-boy, I'm gonna go with no.
|
No chance a male would have my first name either, but I do have a friend whose maiden name was Kim and she married someone with the last name of Kim. I was so jealous she didn't have to go through all the name-change rigamarole! :)
|
My bf and I are Chris and Kristen. :p People don't usually catch on unless they meet us both at the same time.
I also have a friend named Mai. I guess she was seriously dating a guy whose last name was Mai. I'm not sure how he spelled it but srsly? Mai Mai! |
A boy named Sue? What would you do? I think I'd die! LOL.. couldn't resist.
My mom had a friend, Georgette who married George George. So they were George and Georgette George. As a Denise, I would probably feel weird getting serious with a Dennis in part because sales people always ask for Dennis on the phone and that would make me nuts, not knowing who they wanted to talk to. On the flip side, he would get all the phone solicitor calls, so that wouldn't be so bad. |
Honestly, I'd find it irritating. I like having an unusual name, mostly because I always know that if someone calls my name they're looking for me. I don't know how the six Stephanies in my undergraduate chapter put up with it!
|
This is totally off-topic, but my (married) cousins are Ken and Barbie. Seriously. :)
But, on the topic, I've definitely seen a Chris/Chris couple. I don't think I'd have a problem with it personally, but it would be weird for a guy to have my name as a first name. What do y'all think - for heterosexual couples - if the woman has a male-sounding name and the man has a female sounding name. For example, I know a woman named Brian (pronounced breeAHn) and a man named Kim (short for Kimble). They aren't actually together...but what if? |
When I lived in AZ, I met this newly-wed couple through a friend of mine, and their names were Erin and Aaron. People kinda called them "Erin/Aaron squared"
They seemed to have no problems with it :) |
I knew a couple by the names of Daniel and Danielle once. Thankfully, when they had children, they named them Tara and Elizabeth. No dumb variations of their own names.

Speaking of Stephanies, my friend dated 5.... IN A ROW. Yes, they go by numbers, and know this since 2 of them hung out in a group before. I don't think I could date a Phillip. Or someone with my brother or father's name. |
I just had this conversation with some people last week. My name is male, so I would not want to go out with a guy who has the same name as me. The name would make us sound like a law firm.
