Our YMCA and YWCA merged into "The Y" here many years ago. I think it simply reflects how their mission has changed and move away from the religious orientation. But I'm not surprised that not everyone knows what it stood for if they'd never had a reason to ask.

The average person on the street, perhaps, but not a person who is expected to know about the nonprofits in our area.

Hmm. Yeah ok that's probably fair. Although it probably depends on if the YMCA was operating under its full name at any point or if they only interacted as the YMCA while this coworker was there.

Still, things you'd expect someone in the field to know.
