Two thumbs way up.
There's already a mosque closer to Ground Zero, and this building is not just a mosque but a swimming pool, community center, etc.
Muslims died in 9-11 too. Unless these Muslims had something to do with it, people (especially non-NYers) should stop trying to interfere with their freedom of religion and their right to buy and use property how they wish - within all pertinent regulations.

How many (not including the one's flying and hijacking the planes)?
Insensitive at best to build this so close to "ground zero" but this is NYC's problem.

It shouldn't matter if it's 279 or 1.

Why not? That is what the mantra is from supporters and that is the justification used.
Would you agree to the building of a memorial to the Axis War dead next to Auschwitz/Buchenwald/Bergen-Belsen?
A monument to Japanese war dead near the Arizona?
A white supremacist headquarters next to a Civil Rights Museum?
This is just too in your face. I would rather see a building open to all and dedicated to all religions (Judaism/Muslim/Christian/Hindu etc) instead.
But this is just my opinion and in the end the people of NYC have to live with these type decisions which are what I consider "in poor taste".

The "Official" Islamic Religion didn't coordinate the attacks. A group of individuals (who happened to be Muslim) did.
Not the same as your examples.

FYP
Also if you read the Qur' an it quite plainly states that murder is a sin. There is a reason Muslim groups, including the Nation of Islam who isn't even considered to be Muslim by many Muslims, spoke out against the attacks.

On a much smaller scale, it's closer to people protesting the establishment of a large Southern Baptist church near a major site of KKK activity. Sounds just as ridiculous to me.

I didn't know there was an "official" Islamic Religion. I guess that means that there must also be "official" Christian/Jewish/Hindu/Buddhist religions.
Who are these "official" Muslims and how do we get them to stop the terrorists who commit heinous crimes in their religions name? These terrorists were coerced by their leaders to kill infidels and specifically Americans in the name of Islam. There are too many "Harvey Milktoasts" out there that want to just get along instead of calling BS on "official" Islam.
We had 8 terrorists arrested in NC who were plotting attacks. This happened in Johnston County, NC about a half an hour from where I live. Nobody from "official" Islam has condemned these terrorists. They defend them instead.
Maybe they should take the money needed to build a 13 story Mosque/building and plaster adds all over National TV condemning all terrorists and encouraging other Muslims to turn them in before they can wreak more havoc on innocent people. Maybe a large portion of the funds needed to build the Mosque could be used to educate their own followers about "true" Islamic beliefs. Whatever they may be.
It may be true that most Muslims are not terrorists but it is true that most terrorists attacking Americans are Muslims.

I said "Official" Islamic Religion because I wasn't sure what the proper term was. I wanted to say The Nation of Islam, but didn't believe that to be correct. I'm sure you knew what the hell I meant, but being a smart ass was easier for you, I guess.
And you seem to forget the shit that gets carried out "in Jesus' name." You also seem to forget that terrorism is not something that's exclusive to Muslims (Oklahoma City?).
You're ignorant.

Nation of Islam is primarily an African American... well sect is probably not quite the right word. There isn't a Caliph so there is no one true leader of Islam, just highly respected imams in different sects.

The point is that what these individuals did was not condoned by the vast majority of imams and Muslims.

Why didn't you stop that Christian from killing the doctor for providing abortions?

Their terrorist leaders. Who are incredibly different from the Muslims who live in your city. And the Muslims who live in the next city over. And the overwhelming majority of over 1 billion Muslims all over the world.

The myth that "moderate Muslims" never condemn terrorists is perpetuated by the media who never seems to report what "moderate Muslims" say about it. There is no Caliph, there is no Muslim Pope to issue edicts from on high. There is no series of bishops. There are scholars and leaders of the congregations and disagreements over a variety of practices and interpretations of the Koran.
Islam is no more violent than Christianity or Judaism (and so on) People have always and will always use religion as an excuse to kill, to wage war, and to claim land. It's people that are violent, not the faiths, no matter what other flaws they have.

How does a Muslim place of worship have anything to do with terrorists?

Yea, I was going to say the same thing.
I doubt we'd hear anything like this if there had been, say, a church/reflection area/etc built near a domestic terrorism site.
