It's not stalking. It's Facebook.

These women go to your school and you have a public FB profile. They don't have to DO anything to get to that information. It's just there. lol.

I've heard the same thing from folks who get fired/reprimanded by an employer based on FB. It's always "my employer shouldn't be stalking me on FB."

Nope. Not stalking if you put it out there publicly.

Why don't people get this? Especially when they leave their profile information open to the public.

Not to mention, they'd better get used to it. Depending on the chapter/campus their sorority could be monitoring their facebook pages just like their future employers. Girls in my chapter were asked to remove pictures/posts deemed inappropriate pretty frequently.

I always kept my facebook pretty clean, but when my parents got facebook I very quickly made it PG. That was a wake up call.

It's been said over and over again, but it's fairly important: Even if your page is set to private, your fan pages/interests/groups may still be public. Also it's good to occasionally go through and check your privacy settings because sometimes they are changed.

Just imagine you apply for a job and your possible future employer sees that you don't get drunk, you get awesome. Perhaps you like going to work on Mondays hungover or there's a not-so-lovely photo of you in lingerie as your profile picture. That's not exactly the impression you want to give. . . Or maybe you do and that's fine, perhaps it will give your employer a chance to hire someone who s/he feels is more suitable. It may not be fair, but that's life.

The publically viewable fan pages is how I'm able to see what my teenage family members are up to. I'm also happy when I can see what profile photo they have up and their friends list. Gotta keep track of the kids even when you aren't on their friends list.

This is AWESOME. Thank you!

I believe you can make yourself unsearchable though. Or make your picture a question mark to non-friends.

Is it a good idea to set your entire profile to private before recruitment?
I don't have anything to hide. All of my albums are good and I have no questionable tagged photos, likes, or wall posts.
One of my friends is completely deactivating hers during recruitment because she doesn't want it to hurt her. However, I thought that if you had a good profile, it could help you.
Your thoughts?

It's up to you. Is everything squeaky clean? Even your "Groups" pages? Any unpredictable friends who write on your wall?

Even clean, people might make assumptions by anything on your profile/photos/wall. Personally, I'd like to leave that up for personal interaction.

Your friend is smart. Just because YOU think all of your albums are good doesn't mean everyone will think so.

What might not be questionable to you might be questionable to Suzy Sorority. You just don't know. The sororities will already know how involved you were in high school and they'll get to know you during parties. It's better to keep direct control over how you look to sororities. (And employers too, for that matter.) And remember someone can easily post/tag/etc. something less than flattering and Suzy can see it before you have time to delete it.

I would make it un-searchable if it were me. That way you don't have to be inconvenienced by deactivating your profile, but you'll still have privacy.

I'm a little late to this thread, but has anyone else seen PNMs posting on your group's national facebook page asking for recs? I was checking out the national KKG fan page today and there are quite a few girls going through recruitment at various schools begging for recs on there. Most of the requests are polite and well-written, but the whole thing just seems pretty tacky to me and many of these girls have non-private profiles. There are 20,200+ alums and actives who follow the Kappa fan page! Our national director of membership has been politely responding to each one to say recs are the chapter's responsibility, but it blows me away that these girls continue to publicly post these things.

Not on ours, but I have ventured to other groups' FB pages and seen folks asking for recs. I consider FB rec-begging to be as much of a no-no as aking here. They all seem to be from certain schools too.

I think sororities really need to get on the ball with FB and make their pages (or at least posting and wall privileges) private for members only. I randomly went to Theta's page and saw not only rec requests but other inappropriate posts by men and other non-members.

Seriously...this isht isn't hard to do.

^ I also think it's weird when PNMs decided to "like" a specific sorority's page before recruitment even begins...

Yep. It's kind of like when BamaBetty gets on here and asks for recs...and only posts in 3 of the sororities' forums.

The Big InsertMascotsHere need to stop worrying about if a 22 year old sister has a picture of herself holding a solo cup and take a little more care with their own online presences. For starters, get actual members to design the apps and/or pages so there won't be stuff on them that doesn't make any sense...
