Actually, in more recent years it's been changed to STI though that is catching on very slowly. This was explained at a safe sex presentation in college and the instructor said something like "Diseases randomly manifest in the body through no or very little fault of your own. These are 'infections' because you went out and got that."
Though Angela and Mike did call it "VD" in
WDIGM? That was a little weird to hear it in such a recent movie.
