From what I understand, they wanted more "popular" movies to be included in the Best Picture category. Three of 2009's Top 10-grossing movies received nominations: Avatar, The Blind Side, and Up. Last year's Best Picture nominations included zero top 10 hits (No Country For Old Men, Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton, and There Will Be Blood).

Last year's nomination slate was extremely strong, though, in my opinion. All of those were excellent movies.

Am I the only one who found Up in the Air to be mind-numbingly boring?

Oh, no doubt. The only one I didn't really like was Michael Clayton.

Personally, I think by doing this, they're trying to get more people interested in the awards. Because if no one's going to see these movies, they're not going to care if they win or not.
