Curious- When did they decide to do 10 for best movie? It was usually 5.

Thrilled that Sandra got nominated for best actress.

Thanks for posting this!

I have no idea why, but I can't stand Sandra Bullock. I think I'm the only person in the world who feels this way.

You're not - if she wins an Oscar, I'm giving up on the Academy Awards (although I've largely given up on them anyway).

DrPhil 02-02-2010 01:00 PM

Baldwin and Martin as hosts = instant funny

The commercial with Steve Martin tap dancing cracked me up.

DrPhil 02-02-2010 01:07 PM

Here are my picks:

Critics say her performance is one of the things that saved "Nine." It was not received well in the box office and by critics.

Animated Feature Film
“Up” Pete Docter

Best Picture
“Up” Jonas Rivera, Producer

It's 10 as of this year. Mistake as far as I'm concerned.

You're forcing me to question your judgment. Sandra Bullock is perfection. :p

Wow, like there isn't enough dissent (usually) as to who the winner is anyway. This will just split it even more ways and make the win even less legit.

Just because you want to badonkadonk SB doesn't mean she can act. :D

They're always just a popularity contest. I mean Helen Hunt has an oscar because she was cute on tv. If it were truly based on talent alone Meryl Streep and Helen Mirren would have 10 Oscars a piece. How boring would that be?

pomplemousse12 02-02-2010 03:48 PM

The reason they have 10 nominees this year (as far as I know), was because of the outrage caused by The Dark Knight last year.
I never watch them anyway, but I'll definitely keep track of who wins what.

I was surprised that Emily Blount didn't get nominated for "The Young Victoria". She was really good, and usually the Academy eats up those period piece roles

Anyway, I think Sandra Bullock was great in The Blind Side, but I didn't see it as "Oscar Worthy", but obviously the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild did, so I guess she's the front runner along with Meryl Streep, who I usually LOVE, but was underwhelmed with in Julie & Julia. I guess I'm just over her donning an accent and winning an Oscar.

I loved Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds, he made the movie watchable to me (the bloody gore can be too much and I spent alot of the movie with my hands over my eyes), but I loved Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon in Invictus and hope one of them gets the nod.

As for best picture - what a hodge podge of nominees, they seem all over the place! I liked a few of them, but need to see them all, but I'm kind of surprised Avatar is on there. I thought it was entertaining and all, I love shiny colors and flashy visuals, but for an OSCAR?? You've got to be kidding me! ;)

From what I understand, they wanted more "popular" movies to be included in the Best Picture category. Three of 2009's Top 10-grossing movies received nominations: Avatar, The Blind Side, and Up. Last year's Best Picture nominations included zero top 10 hits (No Country For Old Men, Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton, and There Will Be Blood).

Haha...well, a woman can be attractive and a terrible actress. Sandra Bullock fits both categories.

ETA: Since DrPhil started it, I'll give my picks as well. I don't think these should necessarily win (although it would be great if Bridges and Waltz both won), but:

Actor in a Leading Role
Jeff Bridges in “Crazy Heart”

Actor in a Supporting Role
Christoph Waltz in “Inglourious Basterds”

Actress in a Leading Role
Meryl Streep in “Julie & Julia”

Actress in a Supporting Role
Mo’Nique in “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire”

Animated Feature Film
“Up” Pete Docter

Best Picture
“Avatar” James Cameron and Jon Landau, Producers

Last year's nomination slate was extremely strong, though, in my opinion. All of those were excellent movies.

Am I the only one who found Up in the Air to be mind-numbingly boring?

Leslie Anne 02-02-2010 11:35 PM

I just watched Up. I didn't like it and it put me in a bad mood.
