From what I understand, they wanted more "popular" movies to be included in the Best Picture category. Three of 2009's Top 10-grossing movies received nominations:
Avatar,
The Blind Side, and
Up. Last year's Best Picture nominations included zero top 10 hits (
No Country For Old Men,
Atonement,
Juno,
Michael Clayton, and
There Will Be Blood).
