Do you have any idea what animals have to go through to put meat on your table?

It ain't pleasant or pretty. If you have a strong stomach, there's plenty of slaughterhouse video on the internet. I wouldn't recommend you watch it though.

Or are dogs just more deserving of the protection of the law than pigs because dogs are pets?

I think there is a difference between killing an animal for food and torturing/ abusing it for fun. Don't get me wrong. If I had a dog (which I don't now because my apt. complex doesn't allow pets), if there was no meat left and my family was starving (famine-like circumstances), I would find the most humane way of making him our meal. It sucks, but it is true. Some people hurt animals for fun. Those people don't deserve to be oxygen thieves.

Is there a difference? Or is there only a different (like others have said) when it is a certain type of animal?

Have you seen some of those slaughterhouse videos? Some of those animals ARE tortured for fun and then killed for food. Can the farmers (or whoever does the slaughtering) remove the pig ears and chicken beaks AFTER the animals are dead? Of course. Do they? no. Chickens' beaks and pigs ears are cut off while the animals are still alive.

Cows, pigs, etc are not exempt from cruelty just because they are as cute as dogs and cats. The rules should apply for EVERY animal.

ETA: I understand what you mean about cruelty to animals, I agree with you as well (although not to that extreme extent though) but sometimes people forget about other animals aside from dogs, cats, bunnies and the other domesticated animals.

This is a huge topic in vet med these days. Many vets are split on the subject. You have those (mostly the large animal vets but some small animal) that see animals as a commodity and food on your table. Then you have many that think there should be more stringent guidlines at slaughterhouses. Things are slowly changing but I believe they will change for the better, at least I hope so.

We just had a debate on the vet website about kosher slaughter-humane vs inhumane. It was interesting (and a bit disturbing I have to say) hearing the different criteria for the kosher way but I don't agree with it.

I won't say what I would wish would happen to that guy and no I am not a PETA fan, I am just a "I hate crappy humans" person

Ask Michael Vick*

*that sound you hear is probably a can of worms that's opening with Michael Vick and dogs being mentioned within the same vicinity of this thread.

People like MV disgust me.
