Good luck! Elon has gotten a little more competitive since I graduated in 04. Recs aren't required, as others have said, but it definitely helps you stand out. Maggie gave you some great advice. Get to know Greeks in your classes as this will help you the most.
Greek life isn't terribly expensive. The houses only sleep around 12 and don't have large kitchens, so we never had any parlor fees for my organization (I don't think others do, either).
