Congrats on going to Elon! Its a wonderful school!
I'm an active alum and sorority alumni member, there are also a few other current GC'ers that are current students and alums. I will caution you now, not to scare you, but you may want to keep details about yourself to a minimum. Although, I don't think you've posted anything that could hurt you right now.
First off, Elon has got a great greek system! The school also supports the greek system, which has helped it grow tremendously, especially over the last 20 years.
I suggest that you check out all the "stickied" threads because much of the advice given applies to Elon.
Elon holds two types of recruitment :COB (continous open bidding) in the fall (usually second week of Sept, I think). And Formal Recruitment (FR) in January during "Fake Break" (the week between the end of Winter Term and before Spring Term begins). As it stands right now, I believe only some of the sororities who are not at total are participating. I do not know which chapters those are. COB is ONLY for upperclassman and/or transfer students who eligible.
Formal Recruitment is more competitive, but not as competitive as an SEC school. Recs are not necessary, but they can be helpful in setting a PNM apart from the crowd. I know people say it time and time again to "keep an open mind", but really - its really the best advice!
As for your background, no one here can tell you if it will hurt chances. And unless tell someone about your background, they may not know about it (ie saying to much on Greek Chat). Being 20 probably won't be that big of a deal unless someone asks you why you waited to go to school. You should frame answer to be honest, but optomistic and positive.
I will caution you though, sorority members (and fraternity members for that matter) start watching PNMs in the fall for recruitment. Its best to be on your best behavior when you are at a bar, an off campus party or a fraternity party. I'm not saying not to enjoy yourself, but you don't want to be "that girl" in the fall, because it will follow you through recruitment.
Good Luck and Enjoy yourself!
