We do Pillows and plaques. Bigs make pillow for the littles and littles make plaques for the bigs. We don't use paddles.
We've had a jeopardy game as a "test". It was a lot of fun.
Any kind of team building and communication exercises.
I know a few semesters in a row we passed the mascot around. Ran off simple photocopies (coloring pages) and had to tag another members door.
Intramural sports.
Give the New member class a goal to achieve. People work best when they are working toward something.
