She said nothing about outing them, but providing more like a definition of what the character is all about.

Or "who is this Tom Earp I keep hearing about?"

And do we want to keep a record of all the usernames that Tom and Blue Angel have used since being banned?

Exactly! I do not want anything ugly - heaven knows the actual threads involving these characters take care of that! I am simply saying that it is hard to appreciate the references that are made about these "people" without some background info.

The thread was titled, "In this thread we identify..." So, I ASSumed it meant outing them.

(Not directed at you Sensuret--) This thread is not going to end well if we keep mentioning those that we prefer to stay far away and in their happy place. I guess that is what has me all riled up.

Well, the two happiest rainbow ponies keep coming back regardless. But yeah, they'll have new screen names just so they can add to the joy in the this thread.

I would actually find it useful to have a thread listing username changes...be they innocent or cowardly banned sockpuppets. Some of you change your name frequently, and I'm starting to lose track of who's who.

As for the sockpuppets, and by that I really mean just new screennames of banned users who can't go away, that would be a helpful list. I think someone else here has been able to track spammers/trolls IP addresses, too?

I would assume that would have to be the administrator; I don't know that our IP addresses show up anywhere in our posts or anywhere else on the site, and I don't think moderators or super moderators have access to that info.

Well there was someone here - maybe Benzgirl or nittanyalum? - who was somehow tracing when trolls were the same person...

When I was a mod, there was a thing on the bottom right corner of the posts I could click to see the user's IP address. I only had access to the IP addresses for the posts in the forums I modded. It's been years since then, so I don't know if the current software still allows for that. There's a lot of stuff we regular people don't see.

If John granted Super Mod status that includes banning people, I think they'd have access to IP info as well.

That makes sense - it makes sense that mods would have access to that information, at least in their own forums.

I really have no idea, though; never been a moderator and never really discussed it with anyone who is.

I agree. It's like looking into the mirror and calling "Bloody Mary" 3 times. Sometimes you might get lucky and she won't show up, and sometimes she'll show up in full force! lol.

I don't know what this means...
Is this an actual GCer or a literary reference?

Per The Wiki:
Bloody Mary is a ghost or witch featured in Western folklore. She is said to appear in a mirror when her name is called three times (or sometimes more, depending upon the version of the story), often as part of a game at slumber parties.

Seriously? You haven't played "Bloody Mary?" No it's not a GC reference.

ETA: Just saw that MysticCat & I posted at the same time. That is "Bloody Mary."

That's how I understood it as well. Plus, we already have a fair amount of open guessing on the board about the poster behind each of the Sock Puppet names.

I don't necessarily see the point of the thread, but I don't see the point to a lot of the threads on the board (and some people probably don't see the point of some of my threads, like the "Beer Appreciation Thread"), so no biggie.
