In this thread we identify sock puppets, alter egos, etc

After a year or so on GC, I have yet to completely understand, ergo, be able to fully enjoy, the various altercations/discussions that come up between GCers who are currently posting as someone else, discussions that name GCers with a "history", GCers who have multiple personalities, etc.

So, for those of us who need the reference materials to fully enjoy GC, can we start our own GC Wikipedia-type thread?

You could post an explanatory entry or brief synopsis about a "famous" (Chuck Norris in recruitment) or "infamous" (Tom Earp of HPRL fame) GCer so that when those names are referenced in future threads, the newbies can fully appreciate the thread.

I'll start -

Chuck Norris - famous PNM who dominated recruitment with his powerful skills of persuasion and martial arts. Pledged tri delt.

Oh, Heavens. This could turn ugly.
'Tis time to pray for world peace (ahem, GC peace).
And now I'm off, as I need a piece of cake.

Why do we really need to "out" the sock puppets. MOST of them are actually funny and bring CHEER and SARCASTIC WIT to GC. (This is something that has been missing for about two-three years now...)

This is not productive.

I don't have a sock puppet. But, I sure as hell won't out those who do...

She said nothing about outing them, but providing more like a definition of what the character is all about.

Or "who is this Tom Earp I keep hearing about?"

And do we want to keep a record of all the usernames that Tom and Blue Angel have used since being banned? :D

Exactly! I do not want anything ugly - heaven knows the actual threads involving these characters take care of that! I am simply saying that it is hard to appreciate the references that are made about these "people" without some background info.

I, personally, am more than OK with outing the annoying ones (Earp, BA, etc.).

The fun ones can stay anonymous.

The thread was titled, "In this thread we identify..." So, I ASSumed it meant outing them.

(Not directed at you Sensuret--) This thread is not going to end well if we keep mentioning those that we prefer to stay far away and in their happy place. I guess that is what has me all riled up.

That's how I understood it as well. Plus, we already have a fair amount of open guessing on the board about the poster behind each of the Sock Puppet names.

I don't necessarily see the point of the thread, but I don't see the point to a lot of the threads on the board (and some people probably don't see the point of some of my threads, like the "Beer Appreciation Thread"), so no biggie.

I'll bite - My personal favorite -

Sheetcake - Posts pictures of humorous or relevant cakes on threads that have gone down the shitter.

I thought the same thing Tippie did - since the thread title is about identifying sock puppets, I thought it was going to be, well, identifying them.

So, here's a question: If a poster quits using one name and reregisters with another, is that person a sock puppet? (I'm not talking about the people who ask John to change their screen names.) Just trying to make sure I use the proper terms.

Back on topic - I'm curious how Sheetcake got started. I don't need to know who (s)he is, but I'd love to know the backstory.

I always understood "Sock Puppet" to mean someone who hides behind a 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th, etc.) screenname to post outlandish stuff. It could be mildly amusing, or it could be really offensive. It just means that they post regularly under one name, but use the second name for those less-serious purposes.

Well, the two happiest rainbow ponies keep coming back regardless. But yeah, they'll have new screen names just so they can add to the joy in the this thread.

PeppyGPhiB 12-12-2008 03:18 PM

I would actually find it useful to have a thread listing username changes...be they innocent or cowardly banned sockpuppets. Some of you change your name frequently, and I'm starting to lose track of who's who.

As for the sockpuppets, and by that I really mean just new screennames of banned users who can't go away, that would be a helpful list. I think someone else here has been able to track spammers/trolls IP addresses, too?
