I actually rather like VV (which is odd because most people in Ohio are not familiar with it). I have family in GA and they love the stuff so I grew to like it a lot.
I've heard of Southern Proper, but only because my friends at SEC schools swear by it. I know that they mainly only make men's clothing, but I LOVE their purple skull ladies' headband.
I also find their "Belles for Beaus" program interesting:

Yeah, Vineyard Vines has been around for quite a while. I always thought it was funny that such an established New England company has become connected with Southern fashion.

Co-Sign. I remember when i was much younger and used to see Vineyard Vines on Nantucket, didn't think much of it went home one winter came back next summer and it was one of the biggest things around. No idea how it became synonymous with southern fashion

Honestly - I remember going to the Vineyard and seeing people wearing it all over the place. Plus, I used to see it all around Boston. Then, I saw on here that it was a Southern fashion favorite. Not judging at all, just thought it was interesting it had spread across the country.

Annapolis may be below the Mason Dixon, but trust me - any place that would have a college like St. Johns is not southern. 
Also, take a look at the voting patterns of the country, generally, if it's blue, it's not southern (not counting Florida which is full of retired yankees and foriegners).
JK!!  But, having spent a LOT of time in Annapolis, including during this election cycle - the culture and climate are definitely not "southern".

People still wear bowties? The only people I ever saw wearing them were the Nation of Islam guys on campus back in the day, or guys at prom/in weddings. I'm not a fan, if my husband wore one I'd laugh at him.

I'll occasionally wear one in the summer or to a fraternity function. It takes the right personality and overall image to manage to pull one off though. You can either look really good or like a complete ass/nerd in one.

I wear them pretty frequently. I mostly wear them to social functions and the like. I think a bowtie s pretty hard to pull off in most professional settings. However, this summer I will be working for a judge so I think that I may be able to pull it off in that setting. Definitely not a VV one though.

Bowties
It's rather like a woman wearing a hat - with the right attitude it is very compelling. But you do have to have self-confidence and certain panache.
I think they are sexy. 'specially when you stand behind your guy and tie it for him.

Yes. I wouldn't say everyone wears them around here, but they're not uncommon. I almost always wear them to court.
And CB and SWTXBelle are right -- not everyone can wear them. It takes a certain body type and a certain attitude. (One lawyer friend of mine says they show a great deal of self-confidence -- you don't feel the need to have an arrow pointing out certain attributes 'cause you know everyone just knows.  )
And SWTXBelle, my wife agrees with you.
