It does give Greeks a bad rep.
I'm a ZTA but personally I am not offended by the movie. I don't plan on watching it though because it does give greeks in general a bad rep.
ZTA released a statement about the movie.

They thought it was going to give Greeks a bad rep too.
Guess what? Greeks didn't suffer because of it. This isn't bad, compared to the negative media we hear and read about by real-life fraternity and sorority members.

I agree! If anything, it has helped w/ recruitment. I can't tell you how many times I have heard PNMs talk about a book or movie and asked if we did the same things. I will be the first to say that many of the things being said about greek life are true. The problem is that is only illustrates small, dramatic, yet interesting minority... i.e. drinking, parting, hazing. Honestly, I don't think a movie would be all that interesting if they showed sorority girls excelling in their classes, doing community service, donating money to their universities, etc...
Now I do have a problem using established organizations w/o thier consent, in these movies, tv shows, etc.

I think this movie is a silly comedy that isn't offensive at all.

Not only that, but like it or not, chapter image issues/drinking/partying IS a part of Greek life. It's not the ONLY part of it, but it is a fraction nonetheless. And it's not part of the sunshine & roses picture we like to paint about Greek life (all we do is study to get good grades and raise money for the non-profits and hold hands and sing Kumbayah and we NEVER have any problems with any of the people we call our sisters!)
I believe Greek Life as a whole is a great thing, but we're kidding ourselves if we are telling people drinking never happens, or we never disagree about anything, or no one judges the other groups. Even those not in groups judge them.
And if someone could please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought NPHC Zeta Phi Beta's refer to themselves as "Zetas". Is ZTA going to get all upset about that? Or do they not count because ZPhiB is a national org? Locals use "Zeta" all the time.
On my first campus for example, there was a local, Zeta Phi Omicron that referred to themselves as "Zetas". One of their colors was also turquoise. And no, they weren't trying to copy ZTA. For over 15 years they existed and didn't even know who ZTA was until the school wanted them to affiliate with NPCs and they started reading up about the NPC orgs.

Three weeks after this movie comes out no one is going to give a flying f-ck about whether or not it "portrays Greeks in a negative light" (and I'm being nice here by giving it three weeks).
People can search on Google or www.YourCampusNewspaper.com for REAL occurrences that give us a bad rep.
Stop bitching.
If a movie came out about fraternities and one was named Tau Kappa Chi and their nicknames were "Teke," and the chapter was filled with a bunch of drunkards I really wouldn't care because Lord knows there's at LEAST one (or a few dozen, lol) Teke chapter that fits that stereotype.
Whoever says that there is no ZTA chapter that is struggling and is known as the "fat, nerdy, ugly" chapter on their campus is full of shit- especially since ZTA is the 3rd largest NPC sorority.
I wouldn't be surprised if the real issue at hand with Zeta and this movie was the way the girls are portrayed. Would anyone be making a big deal if the Zetas in the movie were affluent, attractive, smart young women?

I think most of the time the name of an organization doesn't matter to non-greeks and even some greeks. Most of the time headlines you see are "Fraternity kicked off campus for hazing" or "Sorority deals with underage drinking charge." Names don't matter. People don't remember them. Especially if they're crazy greek lettered ones.

I just saw a trailer for the movie. I don't see what the big deal was. Looks like every other Greek movie out there.

It looks a little disgusting to me, but then again, I feel that it's just going to be another "Sydney White", which was awful.

I think ZTA is upset because of the use of Zeta AND similar colours. If House Bunny ZETA used, say, blue and silver, they probably wouldn't be as upset.
By the way: Remember the movie Pumpkin? The sorority in the movie was Alpha Omega Pi - AOPi for short. What did Alpha OMICRON Pi have to say about that?

Dear Taualumna, we've pretty much covered why some Zeta Tau Alpha members are taken aback and why their nhq issued a statement.
Just helping you to catch up.

LOL, there's an Alpha Gamma Delta myspace account and it posted the following bulletin encouraging us to watch the movie today:
Quote:
"The House Bunny" is written by an Alpha Gam -- me! (I went to James Madison University, Class of 88.
) So get your chapters to go see it this weekend! Opening weekend numbers are very important -- if studio heads see that chick flicks open well, they'll make more of them! PS I also wrote 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, and She's the Man, so if you liked those -- you'll like this one! Thanks!

I couldn't convince the BF to go see Traveling Pants 2, but maybe I can get him to see this one with me.

I beg to differ. I've seen too much tittage in the ads for this to be considered a "chick flick."

I still find it odd that there isn't a woman by that first, middle, or last name listed as joining in that time frame in our sister database, nor lsited as a notable Alpha Gam.
I have an alleged movie date tonight, maybe we'll see the House Bunny instead of Death Race the Nascar prison movie (kidding, we'll probably see the Mummy because I'm an archaeologist and find it hysterical when Brendan Frasier does it).
