With that said... I am not going to go look for a list of names because I have only had one cup of coffee and I am not up for it... but I remember a list being posted on a different site by someone and I was shocked there were many pro athletes who do change their mind return to the sport with a different team... but dont forget Lombardi himself retired from the Packers only to return to coach another team, Reggie White retired and came back and so did Michael Jordan a couple of times (ok basketball not football but still) ...
many is exagerated...plain and simple.

My whole point is this, Brett Favre is 'unique' because of what he put not just teh Packers thru these past few years but the entire NFL....

Plain and simple, if you are going to retire, sit out for a while and decide youthink you want to come back...fine.

But if every year for 3, 4, 5 years no one knows what you are going to do up until training camp in July and August, then it's a hassle because your team still has no idea of how to proceed!

Should I draft a QB this year? I dunno because we don't know what Favre is gonna do.

Should I start grooming this guy to take Favre's place? I dunno...because we DON'T KNOW what Favre is gonna do until 1/2 past July...

and think by the time Favre always tend to make up his mind, it's past the draft and any 1/2 way decent veteren QBs have been snapped up.....

It's an inconvenience for him to do this each season.

Again as stated before, when you mention Jordan and White...we aren't talking about guys who came out of retirement and inconveniencing a team.

I said it before in earler posts...anyone worth his salt knew that Jordan was coming back.

Reggie White came out due to need.

and honestly the only other person whose unretirement caused controversy was Magic Johnson's.....for obvious reasons....

I don't fault the Green Bay organization...please check out what I just wrote....Favre should have had his mind made up in March....either play or stay retired or immediately ask to go somewhere else.

I have never been a Favre fan but you cannot doubt his ability...he can make a team good and I think he can get the Jets out of the rut that they have been in, but seriously, the man needs to make his mind up.

ok ...

first it is hardly Brett Favre's fault that the "entire NFL" is effected by his inability to decide if he wants to retire or not during an off season and I defininatley think that is a total exageration on your part. The MEDIA may be obsessed by it but it doesnt effect the entire NFL.

What difference does it make if he retires and changes his mind 4 months later or changes it 1, 2 or 3 seasons from now? He is almost 39 years old, he doesnt have time to sit it out for a year or more. He realized that this summer and decided that his days were numbered to play football and he decided not to let these last few hoorahs slip past him.

As far as "should I draft a QB or not this year" TT took care of that years ago when he first wanted Brett to retire and has made it pretty clear at the end of every season that he doesnt really want Brett there anymore. Aaron has been there as #2 being groomed so that wasnt an issue.

You can say that anyone worth his salt knew that Jordan was coming back, but I say that anyone worth their salt knew Brett Favre would be back. My husband laughed at him during his retirement speech and said he will be back by July. There is no way he is done. !/2 the people I talked to pretty much said the same thing. So whats the difference.

oh and here is one list I googled, but there was a bigger one somewhere.

oops sorry that was the wrong list ... I will try to find it later I have to give the dog a bath lol

We all know that Brett Favre will play his first game as a New York Jet this week and the shock of seeing him in a non-Packers jersey will be a bit frightening (as was seeing Jason Taylor in Redskins garb). Still, it isn't like we haven't seen this before from our recently great players.

QB-Brett Favre (Jets)
RB-Emmitt Smith (Cardinals)
RB-Thurman Thomas (Dolphins)
WR-Jerry Rice (Seahawks)
WR-Chris Carter (Dolphins)
WR-Tim Brown (Buccaneers)
OT-Tony Boselli (Texans ... even though he didn't play)
OT-Richmond Webb (Bengals)
OG-Randal McDaniel (Buccaneers)
OG-Bill Fralic (Lions)
C-Mike Webster (Chiefs)

cool...now we agree on exaggerations...heh!

ok....

1. He realized that a number of summers ago that he knew his days were numbered and the Pack should have traded him then...but no...somehow Favre managed to work his voodoo and stay there.

2. If you look at the beginning of this thread...remember I myself said he would be back...thus that point was pointless.

3. All of those players you listed with the exception of Favre DID NOT retire and come back....they got traded.

Emmitt Smith - retired after Arizona opted to not pick him up

Thurman Thomas retired due to injury

Jerry Rice - bounced from the Niners...played in the Disaster Bowl (Super Bowl XXXVII) and lost to the Bucs....played a season with the Seahawks and since no one picked him up...also retired.

Cris Carter and tim Brown - ditto...tried to get with other clubs but due to age...just didn't make the cut

Tom Boselli retired due to injury...

The last 3 guys aren't even in the same category as the above listed players and no where near Favre....

that list is a list of players and how thier careers ended....you were doing better when you had Reggie White on that list....but still not in the same ballpark with favre and his flip flopping.
