I've been fortunate enough to have never had to write a No Rec, as yet. I'll share the hardest ones I ever had to deal with from an advisor standpoint. In one of my first years advising, an in-house active's younger sister was going through Recruitment. I received No Recs from 2 highly respected and trustworthy alums, women I knew personally who were also well respected in the Inat'l org. Seems that in the year since the older sister left for college her younger sister had ... well let's just say went completely wild. I guess she managed to hide it from the older sis.

I had to inform the older sis that we would not be extending her a bid and would actually be dropping her before Pref. (Normally we would drop No Recs even earlier, but we wanted to extend as much courtesy to the older sister as we could.) Older sis blew up and ended up turning in her pin to protest.

I later heard through the grapevine that the 2 sisters got an apartment together. Older sis then discovered younger sis was no longer the little angel she thought. She ended up regretting her decision to resign.

Interesting - when I was in school, our chapter policy was that anyone with a 'No Rec' from an alumnae was cut after first round - no questions asked. Of course I wasn't Rush Chair or President so I don't know what went on behind the scenes.

I think most people are trying to avoid what may be considered membership selection. (my chapter did so, too)

I have an interesting one regarding a girl who decided to transfer colleges after freshman year and was going to rush at her new school as a sophomore.

I didn't write a no-rec for her, in fact, I recommended her, having known her and her family for years.

What happened was the alum group didn't let her rec go to the college.

Apparently, she had had an "interesting" year at her 1st college - sleeping her way through the guys, and that is why she was transferring. Of course, I didn't know any of this being apart from the situation. REALLY SAD because she was a sweet, intelligent girl who just went off the deep end - too much freedom that she didn't know how to handle, I guess.

I found out because I got thank you notes from the chapter for all the girls I had recommended except for her, so I contacted the alum club and they let me know.

Goes to show, reputations matter and follow you around wherever you go...

Is nothing sacred? First it's the CCD classmates' purses, and next thing you know, the chapter petty cash is gone. Glad to know she's not a Chi O, but I'd die if she ended up in another house!

I'm not an alum, but there is a girl from my old HS I will do anything possible to prevent from joining my sorority! No one at all likes her anymore due to a lot of drinking and sleeping around with people she shouldn't, and she even put up pictures of her playing beer pong topless while random guys groped her. I actually saved them just in case she decided to go through recruitment, which I found out today that she did!

Ohh, I'm guessing it's not going to be a good recruitment for her.

Oh my.

I have no words.

Well, except these: would you mind passing this info around to other houses too? I don't really want her to join my organization either!

I've been telling my friends in the other sororities as well, but there's 2 that I don't really know anyone in and I'm still trying to figure out how to best approach that. I don't think anyone deserves this chick.

I'd give the pictures and information to your alumna advisor, and ask her to let other alumnae advisors know about it. They will do what they think best for their GLO, I am sure.

Facebook no-rec

My one and only no-rec was a last minute thing...for a young woman who had some truly outrageous photos on her Facebook page WHILE SHE WAS GOING THROUGH RECRUITMENT. We're talking *barely* street-legal upper body photos, not-quite-street-legal lower body photos, and pictures of her licking various phallic toys, and pictures of her in compromising positions with other people, both male and female. It was so bad that the "drinking from the liquor bottle" pictures didn't even faze me. It was hard, because the chapter really loved her - she was very personable, had good grades, was pretty, had many outside activities (in some of the less-horrible pictures she was wearing her cheerleading or volleyball/basketball uniform).

I think the thing that most turned me off was the level of stupidity you have to have to leave photographic evidence of your less-desireable activities up on Facebook DURING RECRUITMENT! So a word to the wise to all the PNMs out there - clean up your Facebook/MySpace pages before recruitment starts. We DO look at them!

As compared to a lot of drinking and sleeping around with people she should?

This brings up an issue for me this year. I was asked to write a rec for girl who is basically insufferable, causes dramas, is a brat, and bossy. Mediocre grades. I decided not to send it in because I had to either say I sponsored her for membership or say the rec was information only meaning I did not know the PNM. I knew her, I just didn't want to thrust her on to the old gang. So I tore it up. But I've wondered several time since then if I should have sent something that would forewarn them. It's not too late but I'm still torn. Maybe Regina George is the flavor of the month and the chapter wouldn't mind having her but I shudder to think.

There is a check box on my organization's rec form that says: "I do not recommend this woman for membership."

Comes in handy when Regina George decides to rush.
