i would venture to guess that most chapters at one time or another have had a lesbian as a member.they just may not have always been aware of it. i don't think it will be a big deal, unless you make it one.

i agree with ksuviolet06-sexual preference should not be a topic of recruitment conversations. whether you are straight, gay, bi or celibate, it is not a topic for polite conversation.

once you're in, as long as you are discreet, it should be alright. just don't stalk your sisters or become the campus lesbian slut.

Basically what fsuzeta said.

However, if you choose to disclose that information, some members might not feel comfortable inviting you in for membership. Sad to say, there are people out there who don't agree with homosexuality.

I just thought of two chapter sisters from when I used to advise. No one knew of their sexual orientation until their senior year when they admitted to everyone they were in a relationship. It was a bit awkward at first, but eventually we supported them. Anyway, they just moved to CA and got engaged...and I'm so very happy for them because they've come a long way!

And if they have a daughter, she will be a double legacy!

When I was going through rush, one girl spent our entire conversation talking about why she was saving herself for marriage and asking if I was doing the same. Awkward! I definitely agree that sexuality isn't a topic for recruitment. It's like defining yourself solely by just one part of who you are.

And if a group is one that wouldn't want you just for that, then you'll probably be able to tell pretty quickly... people like that stick out like sore thumbs.

Since she posted the same question in the Sigma Gamma Rho forum as well, I assume that she isn't interested in the NPC. None of us really knows whether or not this matters in the NPHC. The advise above, however, is very good for women who are lesbians and interested in NPC recruitment. I know that there were several lesbians in my chapter...none were open until after I graduated, but several were assumed to be lesbians. None of us cared, and we weren't surprised or upset when one of them finally decided to come out of the closet. We actually have a lesbian interest group on AOII inCircle which boasts several members.
