lesbians in sororities
how do you feel about that? im thinking about joining...im pretty feminine so its hard to tell, but yet im not in the closet, so people know...will that affect my choices of getting in?
|
It depends on the chapter and the campus.
Best of luck to you. |
I would have NO problem with that. Especially if she's hot and feminine. ;)
Errr...but I'm not in one anymore. |
We've had a couple of lesbians in our chapter.
One of them was low-key about it, had a long-time girlfriend and we had no problems whatsoever with her sexuality. Another was obnoxious, "prowled" the chapter, and ended up alienating most of her sisters. |
During recruitment, I wouldn't bring it up. Why? Because sorority women are discouraged from discussing topics such as sex, boyfriends/girlfriends, religion, politics, etc. during recruitemnt. If you all of a sudden brought up the fact that you're a lesbian, it might create an awkward situation because that's something that falls under the topics most chapters suggest that members steer clear of. Something else to think about: You also don't know how an individual sister feels about homosexuality. If you were to bring it up to a sister who opposes it (let's face it, some people do), that could affect your recruitment.

i would venture to guess that most chapters at one time or another have had a lesbian as a member.they just may not have always been aware of it. i don't think it will be a big deal, unless you make it one.
i agree with ksuviolet06-sexual preference should not be a topic of recruitment conversations. whether you are straight, gay, bi or celibate, it is not a topic for polite conversation. once you're in, as long as you are discreet, it should be alright. just don't stalk your sisters or become the campus lesbian slut. |
Basically what fsuzeta said.
However, if you choose to disclose that information, some members might not feel comfortable inviting you in for membership. Sad to say, there are people out there who don't agree with homosexuality. I just thought of two chapter sisters from when I used to advise. No one knew of their sexual orientation until their senior year when they admitted to everyone they were in a relationship. It was a bit awkward at first, but eventually we supported them. Anyway, they just moved to CA and got engaged...and I'm so very happy for them because they've come a long way! |

And if a group is one that wouldn't want you just for that, then you'll probably be able to tell pretty quickly... people like that stick out like sore thumbs. |
Since she posted the same question in the Sigma Gamma Rho forum as well, I assume that she isn't interested in the NPC. None of us really knows whether or not this matters in the NPHC. The advise above, however, is very good for women who are lesbians and interested in NPC recruitment. I know that there were several lesbians in my chapter...none were open until after I graduated, but several were assumed to be lesbians. None of us cared, and we weren't surprised or upset when one of them finally decided to come out of the closet. We actually have a lesbian interest group on AOII inCircle which boasts several members.

I'm pretty sure there are a few lesbians in my chapter, but nobody open.
I would expect some girls, even those that consider themselves open minded, might be nervous about living in such close quarters with a lesbian (for sororities with a house or a complex). I'm not saying it's right or fair, but it would cross more than a few people's minds if they happened to know a PNM was a lesbian, through Facebook or word of mouth or whatever. At the same time, I don't really think it's a good idea to jump back in the closet. I don't really know what I would do if I were in the PNM's situation. But DEFINITELY don't talk about your sexuality during recruitment. That would be tacky for anyone--gay, straight or otherwise. |
We all had several lesbians in my chapter. It was assumed but never discussed. I don't believe any of us feel any less about them due to their orientation. Good luck and I would agree with most that you should just keep it on the down low until you're initiated.
