Actually, it is. A former classmate of mine went to grad school at Yale and would tell stories about how dangerous New Haven was outside of the Yale campus. I did a quick check on city data, and New Haven has a crime index of 756.7. The national average is 325.2.

So where in the heck is the local Police Department?
Hell, the city has to be making money off of the Campus and students!

From the table down at Mory's
To the place where Louis dwells
To the dear old Temple bar we love so well
There the Whiffenpoofs assemble
With their rifles raised on high,
And the noise of all their shooting casts a spell.

Actually, I knew that New Haven itself is pretty sketchy, but I thought the campus was a different story -- which isn't uncommon.

Edited to add: Considerably more information about the Yale student -- from Colorado -- who was arrested is in a July 19 article in the Yale Daily News:
http://www.yaledailynews.com/articles/view/21091
(the "Calhoun College" reference is to one of the large dorms that Yale calls colleges)

I think you're right; the campus is an oasis of calm (and privilege) compared to much of the city. Not unusual; to some degree things are like that in Cambridge, Morningside Heights (Columbia), and at Penn, too.
