Sleeping College Student Killed in Shooting

FLINT, Mich. -- A South Lyon man accidentally shot and killed a fraternity brother at a party while playing with a gun, police said.

Police charged Marcus Jun-Mon Yu in the death of Karl Joseph Hansen, 21, of Pinckney, a fellow engineering student at Kettering University in Flint and fellow member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

More of the story

How tragic for everybody.. the fraternity, the families, everybody. My thoughts and prayers are with them.

This is why you never keep your firearm loaded, laying around, or in the reach of someone who has never handled a gun before.

"Playing" with guns is a term that always makes me shake my head in disbelief.

Seroiusly, I'm all about the Second Amendment, but the word "responsible" needs to be added to it somewhere!

The guilt that Jun-Mon Yu will feel for the rest of his life is something no one should have to deal with - nor should the family of Karl Joseph Hansen have to deal with his untimely death.

A true tragedy for all.

I think house corps. should specify no firearms in the house. How very tragic.:(

They do. This incident took place on an off campus apartment.

Glad to hear that - as tragic as it all is, I would hate to see it become an issue for the fraternity and its house corporation.

Word.

How sad, and this young man will live with it for the rest of his life.:(

Should he be given a 1-15 year sentence, not at all. It was not premeditated or any reason for him to shoot a good friend and Brother.

The truth being, never point a weapon at anyone unless you want to use it!

Never assume a weapon is unloaded. Why is it the unloaded ones go off!:o

Being a Police Officer, it did not take me long to figure out that I had the power of God with a 357 weapon, life and death.

It is a heavy resposibility to carry on your hip.

I would've hated to be there when the family was notified.......so hardbreaking.

You're right. I had to meet the parents of a victim of a shotgun suicide that happened in one of our chapter houses at a campus memorial.

It was rough.

I almost hate to say it, but it sounds like it'd make a good opening for a movie. Anyone here seen Magnolia and remember the intro?

Guns at Yale Fraternity House

Related to the topic of guns in houses. At least in this very recent case in New Haven no one was killed or injured.

http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wi...-apconnecticut

Brief excerpt:
A Yale University student who is accused of firing a gun in the living room of his off-campus fraternity house over the weekend has been arraigned on charges of reckless endangerment, threatening and breach of peace.

Yale police arrested David Light, 21, on Monday night at the frat house, Beta Theta Pi, after confiscating 11 guns, including two assault rifles, and a stockpile of chemicals and ammunition, the university and police said.
Light, a junior at Yale, has been temporarily suspended from school. Police say he may face additional charges. He was arraigned Tuesday. . . .

Edited to add: a little more info for what it's worth seems to be in this article from the Hartford Courant:

Is New Haven that dangerous?

Actually, it is. A former classmate of mine went to grad school at Yale and would tell stories about how dangerous New Haven was outside of the Yale campus. I did a quick check on city data, and New Haven has a crime index of 756.7. The national average is 325.2.
