I'm sorry -- in my scenario the woman has enough class not to over-imbibe. I was just commenting on drinking while dancing.

I don't equate common sense with class...especially not with the education on it I've gotten in college. I'm not a fan of the "well they're too classy for that" attitude. The "classy" people I have met...in high school too...were in general very pompous, uptight, and snobby. So I don't give a damn about classy...I'm more interested in people using common sense...AND having fun while doing it. One of the best women I have ever met drank beer out of a mason jar at parties back in her day, and sometimes too much. But she grew up and she's one of the most amazing people I know..."classy" people turn their noses up at her...THEIR loss!
PS-You severely over estimate the average college student.

Check with me in 25 years -- or, you actually might not get it even then.

I don't have to...this type is the kind that shunned that woman. Fortunately, my parents brought me up better than that and I got to know her...I'll be forever grateful.
Those "classy" folks? They'll never know what they're missing because they'll never take a chance when it might look bad. I have noooooo time whatsoever for those that trumpet their class.

Those who "trumpet their class" are the antithesis of class.
I akin it this this line: "Those who truly have the right to be arrogant, never are."

AGDee and Susan314: I am also from Michigan, which may have something to do with our perception of GDI: we all see it as a non-negative thing, and we're all from the same area. Interesting.
When I went through, I was informed during Greek 101 [which all new Greeks must go to, mandatory, including NPHC, NPC and service/professional] that GDI, while composed of what may be considered negative words, is simply a designation. Basically, it's a way of 'separating' people like different GLO's do. I might say, "Oh, I saw Tony the Theta Chi today," so that everyone knows exactly who I mean. In the same way, one says, "Oh, I hung out with Sarah -the GDI Sarah - last night."

Re: GDI
I've heard people use the term proudly, or with disdain, and I have found it easier to just call them "unaffiliated" and leave it at that. I find it to be a neutral term and have yet to have anyone become upset by using it.
On a personal note I don't like the term Independent (regardless of what the GD is) because I am still an independent person separate of my letters, and am not dependent on them for my identity.

My cousin is an AST from Eastern Michigan. I'm estimating that it would have been in the mid to late 80s - she's a few years older than me. Not sure if you were at that school in that time frame, but what a coincidence it would be if you happened to know her!

That reminded me - the Strutters are the SWTSU drill/dance team. They are practically a sorority in and of themselves (my mom and sister were Strutters). At any rate, after a full-colour picture of a Strutter in uniform at a game about to eat a banana ( )made its way into the yearbook, they were forbidden from eating at the games. Yep, good times.

First, let me admit I haven't read this entire thread, but I think I've read enough to get the idea.
We definitly had "rules of conduct," most of which I thought were ridiculous when I was a pledge, but as I got older I saw the reasoning behind *most*. LOL
I can't remember them all of course, but a few stick out quite prominently - all alcoholic beverages must be in a cup, no bottles or cans... I don't remember an issue with mason jars ever coming up....
As for the drinking on the dance floor rule, as long as you complied with the cup rule, you were fine.
- If you smoke you must sit down, w/legs crossed, and I want to say you had to have a roof over your head, but I've never been a smoker....except that one cig my 2nd week of college that almost made me throw up.....so I'm not so sure about the roof thing
- definitely no drinking in your letters or anything else that you would not want to have your standards chair see you doing.....
- obviously no shacking in frat houses or walks of shame out of one the next morning
i'm sure i will remember more, but i think the point to most of these rules is to protect young women from themselves and the stupid things we ALL either did or were tempted to do when we were young, naive freshmen. also, some are just so you don't look like (sorry to be so blunt) trash. i know some will disagree, but there is just something different about a pic from a social event where everyone is holding a beer bottle and a cigarette and one where some are holding cups. obviously, everyone knows they are drinking, but it just looks a little bit classier. maybe that's just being southern.
my only other comment about this after reading some of the posts is - no one ever held a gun to someone's head and made them pledge any sorority, get initiated, or remain a member. if you don't like a group's rules or want to abide by them, why would you want to be a member of this organization? just to make yourself miserable and be a pain in the a**? jeez, some people need to realize that they are NOT going to be a perfect fit for every group and there is NOTHING wrong with that. find a group you are a good fit for and enjoy yourself, while letting the other groups do their own thing. its called a free society.......
