If you're (OneLovve) joining to wear 'Nalia, throw up signs, and stroll at parties, and/or for social status then save your self (or your parents) a couple "bills" and don't waste your own or the organizations time. Greek life my not be for you.

Let's find out if greek life is for OneLovve...pick the hottest day in the summer and go help with the beautification of a particular part of town, or instead of rolling over on Martin's Day, go march and sing, or go raise monies for scholarships in your area, or work at the homeless shelter, or get off work and go tutor kids, or go paint somebody's house that you don't know, or build houses for habitat for humanity, or...get my drift? That is a drop in the bucket in regards to what greeks are doing, old and young! I am sure everyone else with their .08 cents could go on and on about the hard work they exude their in chapters...but the reality is this, I remember when I had my epiphany and realized that it wasn't about me, but how I could change the condition of life around me.

PAPER MADE

To those who are concerned about being "paper"

First let me say that I crossed the burning sands 04/17/1993 at 12:38 a.m. when "pledging" was considered banned ( In 1990 there was a concerted effort by the Divine 9 to implement a new intake process). Anyway this was the process at the university that I attended as a matter of fact each active sorority/fraternity(within the Divine 9) had to see you before you crossed. I know this sounds strange but thats just the way it was and I must say that I don't regret it. I love my sands and my sorority sisters. My point is the important aspect is the respect that you have for yourself and the organization that you want to be a part of. Please know that this is a personal decision that you will have to make. Sororities look for those with good character, leadership skills, scholarship, and who will display finerwomanhood so don't worry about being "paper" just don't be "plastic" - a shell of a soror who wears the colors, does the call, and yet knows nothing at all.

And to all of my sorors - ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPHIIIIIIIIII AND TO MY FRAT BLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPHIIIIIII

YOU KNOW JUST LOVE

This is a very interesting topic. Although I might be "beating a dead horse," I have a quick comment to make...

To the original poster, you have a decision to make. If you have searched yourself and decided upon an organization, I can understand that you might be hesistant to dedicate yourself, for a lifetime, to an organization only to have people in this new community chastise you for how you got there. You need to decide what is more important: You pursuing membership and (hopefully) becoming a member of an org that you connect with through a chapter that, as it sounds, is "doing the damn thing" work-wise, OR denying yourself a chance because of how you would obtain membership.

The point is, when you graduate, and if the organization is still in your heart, your only option will be an alumnae chapter. If you think you are going to "earn" some letters anymore there than you would in the current undergrad chapter, in *MOST* cases, you would be wrong. (I won't assume that for all cases.) Anyway, if what you want is the respect, then by all means, don't join the organization through that chapter. You aren't ready to work for the organization in spite of what others think of your journey, whatever it may be. However, if you want to earn the letters, however you think that happens, you may never get the chance. Just think about it long and hard.

Guess it wasn't so quick... Sorry! lol

That was back in the day when everybody was tight and people would not call your National Headquarters.

Umm,

Blue NYC

Interesting and colorful language in your post. As an AKA that is approaching 25 years (November 11), I will provide a brief explanation. During the last week in pledging, it was called "Hell Week" all pledgees greeted other Greeks (sorority and fraternity). If you're interested in a more detailed explanation, about why this was done, please PM me.

Paper vs Pledge..will always be an issue. Not everyone will agree... Some say its about what happens afterwards, which is true on the "official level", on a social level... it may differ, depend on the type of person you are, depends on what's most important to you.

Whats up frat

At the time we were pledging - we were not officially sorors so we went through the process. I believe when I pledged the atmosphere on our campus was different it was only 500 AA students compared to 16,000 caucasian students which put us in a place where we knew we needed to be close in order to get through school- this in turn spilled over into the pledge process. I am not saying that you should allow your boys to see other organizations- this is your choice- it worked for us- all the organizations became closer and as someone stated it usually happened during "hell week" only. The point of my post was to say aspirants have to make a decision for themselves whether to pledge or not but it all doesn't matter, and I'm sure you will agree if they don't learn anything during the process. I can't imagine those who pledge under you would come into set not knowing anything. You seem like your lines would be tight and I respect that.
