For the life of me I can't imagine why someone would purposely skip a party. Even someone who depledged should be willing to go there unless she burned all her bridges and purposely offended everyone before she left. Sure even then it might be ackward, but 1st round parties are only about 15 minutes out of your life. Suck it up. But if that's not the case, then my original question stands. Why would somebody purposely skip a party?

We had an issue with this last year during recruitment. Girls were FLAT OUT REFUSING to go into certain sororities' parties during 1st and 2nd day. According to our rules, the SRC's (recruitment counselors) couldn't make them go, but if they refused, the SRC had to tell them that skipping parties wasn't encouraged and could negatively affect their invites to 3rd and 4th round.

I can't believe people behave like that. I mean, do these PNMs think they are SO much better than certain houses they can't even condescend to spend 15-20 minutes with them? That's just the epitome of rude. Personally, I wouldn't want anyone wearing my letters who can't be (at the very least) cordial for that short amount of time.
There were a few houses I knew I wasn't interested in during rush, but I made the best of it and was pleasant to the girls at the parties. I think failure to attend all parties without an excuse SHOULD negatively impact the PNMs in some way, there's no justification for being just plain rude.

Oh it was pretty bad. There was one incident that I remember pretty well:
There were 3 friends who were lined up to go into ABC, and were throwing a FIT because they "didn't like ABC's because they were all sluts". The party was starting in like 5 minutes. The SRC told them to just go in and give them a chance, and not to go by the rumors. Well they just didn't want to go. They waited until their SRC was out of sight (she went to go ask another SRC a question) and HID in the restroom down the hall. By the time the SRC returned, the party was starting and she didn't have time to go figure out where they'd run off to. They rejoined the group at lunch after the party was over.
It got so bad that the Greek Life Advisor had to hold an "emergency" meeting with the SRC's after 1st party was over to tell them to make sure that when they met with their groups, they reminded them how inconsiderate it was to skip/refuse to enter parties.

Just My .02, but just because of rumors about certain GLOs should never be a reason for bad manners.
In fact, it and they may be surprised after meeting said GLOs.
Trash talk is just that, trash talking.
If you do not meet the ladies then how do you really know how the are?

If you miss a party at my school, without an approved excuse, (and the only approved excuses are class or illness with a Dr.'s note) you are removed from Recruitment. That way girls can't simply decide that they don't want to go to a certain place. The only way they can remove houses from their party agenda would be to be invited to more than the maximum amount of parties for that given day.

good point, tom. but i guess that just as you can't legislate morals, you can not legislate manners.
it sounds like the only way this could have been prevented was to have some penalty that could be assessed to errant pnms. too bad this wasn't addressed in the recruitment rules.

Please - do you know how many times I've heard about a PNM that walks in the front door and says to the first person they see "Just tell me where to sit, they made me come here and I can't wait to leave. Don't even bother talking to me."
And this is why forcing girls to accept the max number of invitations can backfire...!
