Skipping Parties at Rush

If a PNM skips a party, with no bona fide excuse, they really make themselves look bad. Sorority women talk to each other, particularly during recruitment. Also, sometimes skipping a party unexcused, particularly in first round, can cause a PNM to be dropped from recruitment outright.
Even girls who pledged one house the year before and dropped and who are going through rush again have to go to that house during recruitment. I'm assuming that's what you're alluding to. You have no obligation to keep a group and return after first round, but you must visit them all during first round, or else the point of it flies out the window. No one is going to say or do anything to you. It's kind of almost impossible to have a "bad time" at a recruitment party- everything is happy and cheerful and fun If a PNM says they had a bad time at a recruitment party (and nothing disasterous happened like them spilling fruit punch on a white carpet!), I immediately question whether that PNM is the kind of woman I would want in my sorority. If you can't make it through one 20 minute party... Note: the word "you" here is used a general sense, not applying to you, OP. But I do suspect that OP is talking about skipping the house that they had depledged. |

What made you wonder it, though, if you weren't considering it??? Kind of a strange thing to wonder. You've wondered a lot of things that you say didn't apply to you and/or you wouldn't do. Really, why wonder these things if they don't apply to you? RELAX. Recruitment is going to be stressful enough. You'll be told whatever information that you need to know during orientation. Go enjoy your summer! |

I think you are a rather well-informed PNM, much much much moreso that probably nearly anyone else going through. You know what chips are stacked against you, and there's not much of anything you can do to change those things. So relax, stop worrying, because as they say, worrying is like a rocking chair- it's something to do, but doesn't get you anywhere. |
ucfpnm,
adpiucf and ztangel both graduated from ucf and they would be your best resources for questions you might have concerning ucf recruitment. bellaberlee and a theta whose gc name escapes me right now(and whom i hope wil forgive me) are either currentlstudents there or recently graduated-they would also be great resources, althrough if bella or our ucf theta gc'er is still in school, you should not be contacting then-you don't want to get them or their sorority in trouble for possible rush infractions. the rest of us can only speculate-mostly from posts we have read on greekchat, so we do not have first hand knowledge and therefore would not have totally reliable information to pass on. you can also ask the greeklife office at ucf or wait until you meet your recruitment counselor and ask her in private. by the way, sorority members are usually so busy during recruitment that they don't have much time to visit with members of other houses. |

And since the question seems to be thoroughly answered...... |

I got in, though. :) |
When I went through rush during, approximately, the Stone Age, I cut the sororities I wanted from 12 to three after the first round. I knew I only wanted to be a part of one of the three and I didn't want to waste my time or that of the sisters.
Yes, I was an arrogant a$$ in college. At least for the first semester or so. By all that's right and fair I should have spent my college years huddling friendless in some dank cubby in the student union :( |
I missed two parties on first night. I had a night class on Tuesdays. Luckily, as it was excused, no repercussions. Plus at that time I don't think any cuts were made first night (and I don't think more than 2 or 3 are dropped now, if it's even allowed)
Also luckily, I got to know the girls at those two houses because I joined one of them! Your results may vary. |
For the life of me I can't imagine why someone would purposely skip a party. Even someone who depledged should be willing to go there unless she burned all her bridges and purposely offended everyone before she left. Sure even then it might be ackward, but 1st round parties are only about 15 minutes out of your life. Suck it up. But if that's not the case, then my original question stands. Why would somebody purposely skip a party?

We had an issue with this last year during recruitment. Girls were FLAT OUT REFUSING to go into certain sororities' parties during 1st and 2nd day. According to our rules, the SRC's (recruitment counselors) couldn't make them go, but if they refused, the SRC had to tell them that skipping parties wasn't encouraged and could negatively affect their invites to 3rd and 4th round.

There were a few houses I knew I wasn't interested in during rush, but I made the best of it and was pleasant to the girls at the parties. I think failure to attend all parties without an excuse SHOULD negatively impact the PNMs in some way, there's no justification for being just plain rude. |

Oh it was pretty bad. There was one incident that I remember pretty well: There were 3 friends who were lined up to go into ABC, and were throwing a FIT because they "didn't like ABC's because they were all sluts". The party was starting in like 5 minutes. The SRC told them to just go in and give them a chance, and not to go by the rumors. Well they just didn't want to go. They waited until their SRC was out of sight (she went to go ask another SRC a question) and HID in the restroom down the hall. By the time the SRC returned, the party was starting and she didn't have time to go figure out where they'd run off to. They rejoined the group at lunch after the party was over. It got so bad that the Greek Life Advisor had to hold an "emergency" meeting with the SRC's after 1st party was over to tell them to make sure that when they met with their groups, they reminded them how inconsiderate it was to skip/refuse to enter parties. |
Just My .02, but just because of rumors about certain GLOs should never be a reason for bad manners.
In fact, it and they may be surprised after meeting said GLOs. Trash talk is just that, trash talking. If you do not meet the ladies then how do you really know how the are? Eyes Wide Shut? |
