I see black women at bars all the time - but maybe that's because I usually go with my black friends.

I got out with my one of my pledge daughters on occasion, she's black. But, we still don't see any other black women. She'll go to places I won't go (The Rusty Pick-up Inn).

Let me stop, lol.

An alum claimed she didn't like bars for the same reason. I always thought she was joking.

I want to change this thread into "How come -insert group- does.....?" You know like the Y forum, that was popular in the late 90's/early 00's. I don't know if it's still up. But, I remember reading some funny stuff on there like "Why do white women put their feet on dashboards?" or "Why do older men wear their pants higher on their hips?".

Yes actually there are American Black people at the Plant almost every time I go there. My job held a function there and I sat with my friend, and she is a Black woman from Alabama. We're going to have another event there in the future. Come to think of it I don't think the African students go there, just the American ones. A writer for the student paper published a run down of local bars and said something along the lines of don't go to the Plantation if you're Black and the owners pulled all their advertisements. Most people call in the Plant, and like I said, this town is accepting and if someone did something out of line anywhere the staff and patrons wouldn't tolerate it. I know my boss was on a softball team 30 years ago, and the Plant was their sponsor so I think the name recognition is why it hasn't changed.

Ok I never lived in STL, but I lived in Columbia, which isn't far and I've spent an enormous amount of time out and about in STL. I have to say I agree with you, especially if you're at some of the places in West County, but also down in Soulard, The Landing, or the Loop. I dunno, I've been out in places all over STL, and it seems to me like you do have a valid point about this.

Btw D, have you ever been to Lafayette Pub? I went there once and that was definitely an...interesting (?) experience. I actually saw a girl have sex with a guy in a bar, standing right in front of me...

Also, this thread has really made me miss Big Daddy's, McGurks, Harpos, and all the other places I used to frequent and I'm jealous that you're in STL and I'm not.

I have to agree that it just depends on what establishment you choose to patronize. Here in Houston, there are a number of bars / clubs, and they do seem to be separated by race. Most places in downtown and an area called the 'Richmond strip' tend to be more White / Asian oriented. There are a number of Latino / Tejano clubs and bars around town, and of course you have your majority Black clubs and bars. It just depends on where *you* want to go.

I also have to agree that most Black bars / clubs / lounges tend to be more dance oriented (music, DJ, dance floor), where the White ones tend to be more stand around and drink.

Just to add, I too would not live in an area with 'plantation' in the name.

I just drove my friends home from The Plantation and it appears the name is going to be The Plant from now on, and the logo is someone "Planted" on a bar stool drinking a beer. The nickname remains the same, but the meaning has changed. There used to be a sign on the roof, but I can't remember if it is there anymore.

Oh yeah Dionysus, there were Black people there but no women, just guys. I made sure to look just for you. I'm going to keep an eye out this weekend since it is homecoming and I'll have a tally for you

my bar experiences are limited to going with white coworkers (and being one of the only black females there) AND/OR going with a group of black girlfriends and us being the only ones there... no shortage of black men tho... but that's a totally different topic.

i agree with the poster that said the smoke in hair smell is a deterrent. I would only go to a bar on an evening where i planned to wash my hair / get it done the next day anyway.

i prefer lounges on the rare ocassion i go out, and i LOVE drinking at home.

Maybe it's the bar itself you go to. If they play damn foo fighters and nsync you might not see any beautiful sisters. I live in Raleigh, NC and I know that if I go to the "Ale House" on Wake Forest Rd. Yeeeeaaaah!! Its going to be what the white folks hate. "Blacked Out!" Full of fine black women. Or if you go to a bar in one of the "chocolate cities," ie; Atlanta, DC, Philly... Then of course your gonna see black women. It's all about location, location, location, and music. Finally, and I praise the black women for this one. Most black women are not gonna chill at a spot filled with more white men then black men.

Tis true for this Black woman. I go where I am comfortable and I tend to be more comfortable in my chill time with places that cater to Black people.

I've gone to Cosmos and enjoyed myself because it was a nice mix and no cover charge, lmao.

And I am with those who prefer smoke free or less smoke filled environments. Although a tip I learned is to spray your hair with oil sheen before going to bed and the smell will at least be gone from your hair.
