Live Story - Sorority Recruitment Spring '08
I LOVE reading everyone’s recruitment stories, it’s definitely helped me learn what to expect from rush. So I figured I’ll post mine too - here it is!
And obviously if you know or think you know what school I go to PLEASE do NOT write it here, but PM me! I’m a little apprehensive about posting this online as it is happening to begin with. But I’d be more than happy to talk to you via PM.
So here’s the basics:
My school has six sororities.
Rush is 5 days, including bid day. All the good stuff starts tomorrow.
I’ve been waiting for this for months so right now I am so incredibly excited.
I’m the first person in my family to even consider a sorority/fraternity (my mom thinks I’m crazy, all she really knows about Greek life is what she’s seen in movies or in the news though)
Rush is deferred, obviously. Here’s the impressions I have of the sororities so far. (I know, pre-judgments are bad. But hey, they’re also sort of unavoidable when rush is deferred) and I’m naming them after classic actresses!
Judy Garland: I know a couple girls in this sorority. My overall opinion is that they are the crazy, hilarious, bubbly, fun-loving bunch of girls. So I find it interesting that I am drawn to them because I am more reserved, and while I love having a good time with my friends I don’t totally see myself here. However a few of these girls have been very very good friends of mine. I’m excited to see what they’re about, I have a feeling it’s going to be a lot of fun crazy energy
Ingrid Bergman: I do not know a single person in this sorority, so I can’t really say anything here. From what I’ve heard, their reputation on campus is not the greatest. I briefly met one girl though and she was really nice and hilarious! So even though I’ve heard bad things about the chapter, the one girl I met last semester totally erased all of those thoughts. Just an example of how one person can represent an organization well. And since I got such a great impression from that girl and because I don’t know too much about them, this is one of my favorites going in.
Audrey Hepburn: I’m going to be honest. This sorority is the reason I’m rushing. BUT, that doesn’t mean I have my heart set on it or am even sure it would be a good fit for me. I’m just saying that from what I’ve seen of the sisters I’ve gotten a shining impression of Greek Life. I’ve noticed these girls on campus and in some of my classes, and they are gorgeous, smart, poised, and it seems like they have it all together. Plus, I love their philanthropy. So I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more of this sorority during recruitment.
Grace Kelly: All the girls here love their sorority and have a lot of spirit. They’re also very sweet. I wouldn’t say they stand out to me for anything I can explain, but it’s definitely refreshing to meet people who are down to earth and just love what they do. I am definitely interested to visit them during recruitment, but I’m not really sure what to expect. I don’t have any friends who are in this sorority so I cant really say much more.
Elizabeth Taylor: These girls seem like they have a great dynamic with one another. None of them have ever struck me as friendly, but I think once you’re in their group of friends you get along great. I’ve heard its rather clique-y and I’ll be honest, I’ve noticed sort of a snotty air from a few. But I will say it is a few and I’m sure most of the girls are down to earth. I don’t really know many Elizabeth Taylor's personally so I don’t want to make any hasty generalizations.
Deborah Kerr: Once again, I know very little about this sorority. I’ve heard they’ve won awards on campus and that it’s a good sorority to be in. That’s really all I can say.
I’m really just hoping to find a group of girls with whom I can be a totally uninhibited version of my goofball self and still be totally comfortable. Girls who I could be good friends with during college and after.
I’ll write more soon when something interesting finally happens!
and oh my gosh this is totally unrelated but the people who live above me have been slamming stuff around for the last hour and a half. I’m pretty sure it’s nothing scandalous but it sounds like they’re throwing furniture around. Haha whaaaaatt. Maybe I’ll investigate....

Moon River, wider than a mile,
I'm crossing you in style some day.
Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,
wherever you're going I'm going your way.
Two drifters off to see the world.
There's such a lot of world to see.
We're after the same rainbow's end--
waiting 'round the bend,
my huckleberry friend,
Moon River and me.
Pulling for Audrey Hepburn!!! Good Luck!!

I'm pulling for Ingrid. I like the idea that your own experiences defy gossip. Good luck to you!

Day One
I just got back from my first day and wow! What a whirlwind day. I’m exhausted but it was a lot of fun
I went to five sororities – I had to miss one but of course it was for a legit reason and I was excused.
Judy Garland: Oh my gosh their room was so cute! I chatted with a bunch of girls, but my favorite part was seeing some old friends I haven’t seen in a while. I really loved this house but I don’t know if it was because I had great conversations or because I was happy to see old friends. If I pick a house I want to pick it because I can get along with most of the group, not just 4 or 5 that I already know. So I’m definitely hoping to go back and meet more people.
Ingrid Bergman: Well I was thinking I would really like this house but honestly, I was not a huge fan. This is the only one I saw today where I didn’t feel comfortable. I loved the colors and decorations and stuff but there wasn’t one person I talked to that I could see being sisters with. The conversation was a little awkward. The girls were nice enough but maybe not very well trained to rush people?
Audrey Hepburn: This was one of my favorites today by far. The girls had a lot of interesting stuff to talk about. I really liked everything I learned about their sorority and everyone was sweet. I was a little intimidated because the girls here are gorgeous! Seriously. However everything felt sort of rushed and I felt like the conversations were pretty general in topic, but thats probably what they’re supposed to be like the first day. Everything went really smoothly and I would be thrilled to be invited back here
Grace Kelly: Well this was sort of the opposite of Ingrid. I was not expecting to be a huge fan, but I LOVED it. I got that feeling like meeting an old friend for the first time. I was probably most comfortable here today, and everyone was down to earth and just really sweet. I definitely want to go back tomorrow!
Elizabeth Taylor: This was the last house I visited today. I was expecting to not like it very much, but it was kind of fun! Well their songs were cute and the girls I talked to were nice. I don’t think this will be one of my final choices, but I was pleasantly surprised by my time here today.
Deborah Kerr: This is the one I had to miss today.
So we didn’t rank them, but just picked our least favorite since tomorrow we’re going back to 5. I picked Ingrid. This morning I totally would not have seen that coming, but I just wasn’t impressed and the others all had something that made me want to see more.
Well that’s basically it for today. Have a lovely day everyone!

Day 2
Well good news and bad news! I got invited back to half of the houses. But I got cut from the other half. ouch.
Judy Garland: I went back here this morning, but the conversation didn't flow as well as yesterday. I'm pretty sure my excitement about this house yesterday was more seeing my old friends than feeling like i belonged here. I really like this house and it's cute, but I think its probably not for me.
Ingrid Bergman: Well I chose this as my least favorite yesterday so obviously didn't get invited back
Audrey Hepburn: I did not get an invite back to Audrey. I was most disapointed about this one. I really loved this house yesterday, and I liked the girls I met. I don't think I did anything wrong, it's just probably how it goes. And I was thinking about it, and you know as much as I loved this one and everything I saw about it I probably don't fit in here as much as I would like to think. So I'm a little sad but it's okay
Grace Kelly: Well this is the one I absolutely loved yesterday. But today I felt like I kind of blew it - this was my first one today and I went right after I found out I got cut from Audrey and Elizabeth. So I was a little sad but really trying to be happy, and the conversations were so generic and, well the girls were nice but there weren't any great connections. Right now, I am still really interested in this house and today I saw more about it and really got into the events they do. But I left kind of feeling like I would be cut. And seriously, I'm probably going to be really sad if I do especially since I felt like I was so at home yesterday
Elizabeth Taylor: Didn't get invited back, but not too sad since I knew it probably wouldn't be the house for me anyways.
Deborah Kerr: This is the one I had to miss yesterday, and I was a little nervous I wouldnt get an invite because of that but I did! So Im happy about that, and I'm visiting this one soon so I'll write once I've been there.
I was more disapointed than I thought I'd be after getting cut. Like the first thing I thought of was, "what did I do wrong, do I really make such a bad first impression?" But I guess that's how it works. So I'll see tomorrow. But this morning I thought for the first time since I decided to go through recruitment that maybe greek life isn't for me? hmm we'll see.

Don't even start that... Try to keep a positive attitude throughout FR. If you're depressed about getting cut, the chapters you DO go to will see it and think that's just how you are and that's not a good impression to leave. You want them to think you're happy to be there or you definitely won't get invited back! And you should be happy to be there, these are women who saw something in you and wanted to get to know you better, so be happy about your invites and go out and have a great time! (and keep us posted ).

Oh my gosh! haha, no you're totally right, maybe I wrote it wrong, but I didn't really mean Im going around depressed all day because I got cut. And I was actually super excited to go back to Grace Kelly. I was just sad at first because I think I wasn't really expecting it (I know, I was probably a bit too confident). And I always sort of assumed I would be in a sorority but i think it's good to keep in mind that it might not be for some people. But once I got over that, I did have a great time this morning and I'm really looking forward to seeing this other chapter. Haha so Ill post once Ive seen it!
