longest named sorority?
Here is an interesting story I uncovered. The current Alpha Omicron Pi chapter at Auburn may have operated under more names than any other sorority or fraternity anywhere:
A local sorority, Phi Delta Rho, was organized at Auburn University in 1923. It became Gamma chapter of a small national, Phi Alpha Chi, in 1927. That sorority was absorbed by a slightly larger sorority, Sigma Phi Beta, in 1928. Because of the depression Sigma Phi Beta was absorbed by Phi Omega Pi in 1933. After World War II when Phi Omega Pi voted to be absorbed by Delta Zeta the Auburn chapter opted out of the merger because there was already a strong Delta Zeta chapter on campus. Desiring to remain as a unit they petitioned another sorority as a chapter. On August 10, 1946 they became Delta Delta chapter of Alpha Omicron Pi.
Since initiated members of a petitioning group may normally become members of the new sorority, a charter member of the original local organization could have been an initiated member of five different sororities all on the same campus! Or better yet, she could have said she was a member of Phi Delta Rho Phi Alpha Chi Sigma Phi Beta Phi Omega Pi Alpha Omicron Pi sorority at Auburn University. Wow!!!
Can any fraternity or sorority chapter top that?
