Question Attorney (former Greek) wants to come speak to your org. about preventing legal prblm

I am a current criminal attorney and former greek fraternity member. I would like to come and speak at any organizations weekly or monthlky meetings about the chapter and each member can and should avoid any dealing with criminal investigations. These include investigations for hazing, drugs, dwi, gambling, assault and theft or more seious allegations of sexual assault or aggravated sexual assault. As a former fraternity member and current prosecutor, I have the experience to pass on and hopefully prevent you and your brothers from making the same career altering mistakes thta I saw in my college experience. Please email me at bthudson@gmail.com if you wish to have me come and visit at no charge to your fraternity or ther student org.

Not to sidetrack, but did you disassociate from a GLO? If not, you are not a former member...you ARE a member.

Additionally, why are you targeting chapters? Wouldn't this type of information be better filtered through the national organizations, since many have their own polocies and prcedures for dealing with these situations?

Back to your regularly scheduled message.

Former Greek?

You'll find that what credibility you may otherwise have tends to take a deep six with lots of people around here if you refer to yourself as a "former" member. Lifetime commitment and all that, you know.

Just curious -- is your "offer" limited just to the state(s) where you are licensed, or are you offering to go anywhere, regardless of whether you are licensed there or are familiar with the local laws?

And one other observation. If there's one thing that I simply don't understand, it's an attorney who doesn't take the extra time to proof-read. If you're going to offer your services to people who've never heard of you and have no clue whether you are competent or not, sentences like this one:

don't exactly engender confidence in your abilities. Just a two minute proof-read might have caught that "organizations" needs an apostrophe, that there seem to be at least two words missing, and that there is no such word as "monthkly." And that's just one sentence -- in your brief, five-sentence post, only the first sentence seems to be "error free."

I wouldn't expect too many nibbles.

Quoted for posterity.

Also, I thought about deleting this thread, but I figured its entertainment value would be too high.

He's a "Criminal Attorney." That alone is awesome.

For the sake of fairness, while we believe that "once a (fill in the blank with two or three Greek letters), always a (fill in the blank, hopefully with the same letters), a huge number (I'm guessing a substantial majority) of Greek alumni refer to being a "former" member.

It ain't right, but it is reality.

As for being a "criminal attorney," well...

Response to Attorney thread:

I read all of the familiar criminal attorney riffs and was quite amused. Maybe this 34 year old bOard certified criminal law attorney is only out here desiring one thing.

You can be sarcastic, rude, hypersensitive and disimissive, but I would ask the following questions to see if you really have no use for a "criminal attorney" :

1. have your ever known anyone stopped for dwi or dui?

2. do you any have idea what AN ARREST, not just a conviction, for dwi or dui can do for a young person seeking employment with a school district or private sector employer?

3. What do you think a drug arrest or contributing to a minor arrest would do for a young prospective emplyee?

4. I am quite busy with current clients who have been arrested on DWI, DUI and Poss. of narcotics cases, who did not heed my advice the first time THEIR case was dismissed.

5. The simple fact is this: AN ARREST WILL RUIN YOUR LIFE..... NO ARGUMENTS.

6. I WANT TO HELP THOSE THAT DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.

7. THE DETRACTORS TO THIS BLOG CLEARLY HAVE NO FEAR OF EVER DRIVING AFTER ADRINKING 2-3 BEERS IN 2 HOURS.

8. I AM A GREEK. BUT AS YOU WILL SEE, AFTER 12 YEARS OF LEAVING COLLEGE YOU TOO PROBABLY WILL SAY YOU WERE A FORMER GREEK

9. AS A PIKE TWELVE YEARS AGO, I CAN TELL YOU, A STOP FOR SUSPICION OF DWI WILL HAUNT YOU FOREVER.

10. DISMISS THIS ADVICE ALL YOU WANT, BUT IF YOU WANT TO SAVE YOUR CAREER, THINK ABOUT CALLING A BOARD CERTIFIED CRIMINAL LAWYER WHO CAN TELL YOU HOW TO BEAT THE TEST, THE ARREST AND THE RAP.

11. IF YOU FIND THIS THREAD COMICAL, THEN DISREGARD, BUT REMEMBER NEXT TIEM YOU HAVE A FEW PITCHERS WITH BUDDIES; I AM THE CURRENT ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY WHO CAN PREVENT THE POLICE STOPS FROM RUINING YOUR LIFE.

12. SO THOSE OF YOU FRAT AND SOR. MEMBERS WHO WISH TO MOCK MY POST, I PRAY YOU NEVER END UP BEING STOPPED. I ONLY POSTED MY INFORMATION TO PREVENT ANOTHER COLLEGE STUDENT FROM LOSING HIS OR HER DREAMS AS A TEACHER, LAWYER OR DOCTOR.

IF YOU WANT TO HAVE ME PASS ON A FEW CAUTIONARY WORDS ON HOW TO BEAT A DWI OR NARCOTICS STOP TO YOUR CHAPTER, PLEASE CALL 830-534-4924. I HOPE I CAN HELP.

Mr. attorney sir:

Are you seriously offering to come and offer legal advice in jurisdictions where you are not licensed to practice law? That very much seems to be what you are doing here. I happen to know that's not quite kosher.

Your grammar is atrocious for someone with a J.D. Here's some advice -- if you're trying to pass yourself off as a professional, write like one.

As to how to beat the "arrest, the test and the rap," it varies from state to state -- A LOT. Again, I do hope you are not offering to give advice in jurisdictions in which you are not licensed. Look around, I have not deleted a single offer such as yours from an attorney, yet many attorneys do post here on a regular basis. There are many good reasons that they have not posted offers such as yours.

Doctors are "board certified." Attorneys are licensed, barred, etc. Board certified is not a term used in the legal community to describe ourselves. (I myself am an attorney licensed to practice in 3 states, so don't accuse me of attorney bashing). EDIT: Apparently Texas does use "board certified" in some instances... my bad. Guess it's a Texas thing because that's what I mainly see when I google. You may want to be aware of rules regarding attorney advertising in different states, since you are basically soliciting every state. In many states you may be prohibited from advertising yourself as a "board certified attorney." Actually, you probably couldn't even advertise in most states because you're not admitted to practice in them!

Also, if you are really an assistant d.a.(Which isn't as big of a deal as you're making it out to be), does your supervising entity know about this "side" job? Do you have your own malpractice insurance to cover this side job?

Your posts here certainly don't reflect a desire to present yourself as a professional. Rather you appear to be a person who, if invited to a chapter, would just lecture on the evils of greek life.

Aside from all that, anyone who is spamming an internet message board to get speaking engagements probably doesn't have enough experience to make it worthwhile. And doing it for free??? I'm calling bs on that. I know what ADA's make, and it is certainly isn't enough to do that. Again, my bet is that the poster is backed by some "church" and has a Rev. Hatchett like message.

No.

There are plenty of men and women here WAY past 12 years out of college, and they DO NOT refer to themselves as "Former".

Oh, and this isn't a Blog.

Okay, it's a heck of a lot easier to read this thread and not my blackberry (where I wrote my last post from)...

At least the phone number he gave out is a private cell phone (Sprint out of Gillett, TX, in case anyone was wondering) and not his desk number.

As one of the "detractors to this blog," let me fill you in a little. I've been practicing law for over 20 years. I'm licensed both in state courts and in numerous federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court, where I've had more than a few cases.

I also know how to spell (or at least use spellcheck), how to punctuate correctly, how to put together a coherent sentence and even a coherent paragraph, and how to turn off ALL-CAPS. Attorneys who shout all the time usually do so to mask the fact that they really don't have anything worthwhile to say. It's kind of like banging your fist on the table, you know.

But wait . . . there's more! I know what solicitation is, and I know not to offer my services in a jurisdiction where I am not licensed -- both because it would be illegal to do so (talk about things that can screw up your hopes and dreams) and because I have enough self-awareness to understand that I don't know all of the ins-and-outs of the laws in states where I don't practice. I've served on bar grievance committees before -- I know how lawyers can get themselves into hot water this way. (BTW, with the minimal information you've put in this thread -- an email address and a phone number -- it takes about 2 minutes at the Texas State Bar website to figure out who you are and which DA's office you work in.)

So it's not that I have no fear of "ADRINKING 2-3 BEERS IN 2 HOURS." Definitely not. I do, however, have a strong distaste for attorneys who behave in an unprofessional manner.
